Denny

Don't be cruel we all by now know Hedricks - another favorite of the selector, is a regular in the Proteas squad - is really not up to standard.  I do not think Maharaj is as poor as Dave made him out to be.

Mike

It was me that said I thought Maharaj wasn't anything special and that we'd be better off with more batting depth and a part-time spinner. He's perhaps a little better than I made him sound, but really, he's the victim of the bigger picture...that of needing batting depth;

If we renew the top 6, we'll want batting depth because most of the replacements will have little Test experience.

If we don't fully renew the tops 6, and keep say three of the current top 6, we still need batting depth because we'll have 3 noobs and 3 experienced guys...but who have been part of a Proteas side getting very low averages for a prolonger period.

Something has to give, but where..?

You can't drop Rabada or Nortje, and you'd be mad to drop Jansen.

You have 2 spots left...Ngidi or Maharaj.

Gerald Coetzee for Ngidi would be the other option.

We can throw terms like balance around...as long as we understand that balance is done with mass and not volume. Right now, the batting is light.

Dentsie...the savant-level call that I made on Hendricks will haunt you until the end of time. Therefore, it's understandable that you can't let it go. Funny, but understandable.

I think we need to have a look at how Ferreira is doing in the rest of the series.   He is quiter a good bowler as well - to average 7 rpo in bowling is not a mean achievement.

Ferreira is a decent player, Mike.

I'd 100% have him ahead of Ngidi or Maharaj. Pat Symcox 3.0 haha

If he doesn't get a shot then I hope he goes abroad and earns the big bucks.

Adding Coetzee and Farreira at the expense of Maharaj and Ngidi would immediately strengthen the side.

But in blackie-so-oppressed-land you'll never be able to swap to whites for two non-whites.

Stop grovelling, it's nauseating.

Here, put a brake on your fat lip.......learn something.

I think we need to have a look at how Ferreira is doing in the rest of the series.

The Aussie commentators had it right when they said Maharaj bowls the same ball all the time. Those who have played the game know that variation is crucial to the spinner

Schplott! (please note the spelling Quisling).

Irrespective of what any of us says on this site the selection of the Protea squad will remain a joke and a recipe of disaster.   However, I must say you are correct in this case.    If Maharaj is indeed a good spin bowler he would be playing IPL cricket and he is not.  India is the norm for spin bowling and of the IPL teams ignore him there is something amiss in his bowling.

However, this is also the case with batsmen.   Deficiencies in batting becomes clear and really problematic with some players eg Graeme Smith who after 2011 became a joke in ineffective batting.
