R Ashwin Backs South African U19 Star 'Baby AB' To Bag Contract At IPL Auction 2022

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin shared his thoughts on the U-19 youngsters who could land contracts in the upcoming IPL 2022 mega auction.

However, Ashwin remarked that in the past, certain extraordinary situations of U-19 overseas cricketers landing IPL contracts had occurred, naming Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Rashid Khan, Quinton de Kock as examples. Ashwin said Brevis might get picked as well because of his performance in the World Cup but it is highly unlikely. Brevis is a big fan of AB de Villiers and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). He has even expressed his desire to represent the IPL side from the south. 

"One player from South Africa, known as 'Baby AB' is being rated highly. His name is Dewald Brevis. He is playing extraordinarily well. But, will he be picked? Every team has only 8 overseas slots so it remains to be seen if teams would use one slot for an unproven but talented U19 cricketer. He is being called 'Baby AB' but let's see if teams go for him," Ashwin said.

I gave a list of SA players on the auction  list lower down.    There are in fact three people consulted by the IPL franchises  when it came to auctions.   For instance in a surprise move last year Mumbai Indians contracted Marco Jansen.   The same happened 2 years ago when Colcutta contracted Nortje.    There is no doubt that when they consider Brevis Bengalore will consult AB on the issue.

As to the rest there were 1295 potential candidates on the list originally and that was reduced to 590 after consultation with the various franchises and consultants.    Brevis is amongst the 590  players so somebody might have mentioned him as  a potential candidate for purchase.

Rabada is on the auction list - but Nortje is not.  The reason is that Delhi decided to retain Nortje  and not Rabada.  Nortje is a lucky guy - his salary for the 10 week tournament is set at just over US$1 million.

If you go through the list given by me you will find a number of Knights players and Duan Jansen  on the list - why would that be?   I think the reason must go back to the recommendations of Donald in their cases.

Now back to cricket - I see that one of the newspapers in India suggested that Bengalore should contract five players with Brevis one of the five to be bought at a maximum price of 75 lakh.   They would probably have contacts with news sources that would know the thinking of th clubs.   

For his sa ke I hope it is true - he would earn R1,5 million in the 8 weeks in the tournament  if that report is true.   .    

It wouldn't surprise me if he gets himself a contract.

The very sad part is, me and all my mates that I talk to would openly support a complete black Springbok team, if it was selected purely on merit.... same as cricket....

I'm afraid to say it has nothing to do with merit and everything to do with politics, matter of fact it would be a non issue if selection was based on merit. The ANC mandated the ethnic make up of the team without a slimmer of thought to the merits of national selection. Winning was an after thought, how could merit be a consideration when they don't know whether the ethnic makeup of 6 black players, one colored and one Indian player would be of national standard......it's always just been about ethnic numbers.

In 27 years the system has produced one half decent black batsman in Temba Bavuma....now here's the thing......seeing they've made it a numbers game shouldn't they be held responsible for producing quality of player alongside of those mandated numbers? Bring it on, I'd love to see an ethnic black Gibbs, Kallis, Smith, Kirsten etc......wouldn't we all? Well why not, the black population is big enough to roll them off a conveyer belt.

Some more or better blacks than others...some not black enough ? Apartheid has got a new face..."Transformation" might be way less restrictive than Apartheid was, but it still have its roots in racialism...you can't eradicate the legacy of discrimination by discriminating against the discriminators of the past...Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu understood this, sadly most other leaders don't...pity we can't move on.

It's a crying shame that one has to think along the lines of colour instead of thinking of someone with a ball in his hand and another with a bat in his hand ready to entertain. Actually someone asked me what Ozzies thought of South Africa's racial policies and when I told he that they really didn't think anything of it he got quite upset.

Very similar to the current shitfest that is happening with UCT, where their ongoing application policy stipulates that you need to disclose what previous disadvantage you had as a Black, Indian, Coloured or Chinese.... to ascertain your level of acceptance or enrolment to the university.

All academic results or performances should just be submitted to UCT with absolutely no other information, and selections to attend UCT should strictly be based on that criteria alone.... nothing more..... then you will continually have the cream of the crop students

Quotas aren't acceptable at all and the only thing that would even make the idea debatable is if the government at least did its share. 

Instead, it's simply racial directives from on-high with divisive mandates aimed only at claiming political credit.

The best solution is to rug-pull the system by removing the actual talent.

Their is not use staying back in RSA playing for peanuts and in teams selected on color.

Go overseas young sportsman and women and fill your pockets with real money and in teams where your talent will be appreciated and rewarded with national honors.
