What do we reckon is the best end for the fastest bowler in the team to bowl from? Up the hill or down the hill? Yes, the conventional wisdom is for your fastest bowler to bowl downhill…but are we certain that is the correct strategy? Obviously landing, follow through and other factors play into it because two identical bowlers will have different issues when running up or down the hill to deliver. For arguments sake, let’s assume all things are equal. There’s something that i’ve never really seen discussed… The same bowler, bowling at the same speed, will have the ball arrive at the batsman sooner when he is bowling uphill. It’s simple geometry. To my mind it accounts to some degree for the extra swing when bowling downhill since the ball spends more time in the air. The field at Lords slopes approximately 8.5 foot end to end. If only i wasn’t doodling in math class. Moz, this looks like one for you…
