Does anybody remember the Stander Gang in the eighties, Andre Stander, Patrick McCall and Alan Heyl.
Stander was a SAP Captain that had an excellent record but the cruel police work against the Blacks messed up his mind and caused him to go rouge, son of a General in the police force and together with Mc Call and Heyl, they robbed banks... many in SA for quite a long period successfully.
Stander was portrayed as a romantic rebel who did not harm anybody, never killed or wounded his victims, although Mc Call did once.
They bought a yacht, The Lily Rose from a friend of mine Ian Allen who was a yacht broker. Ian had no idea. Their plan was to use this yacht to escape to a foreign destination, probably the Caribbean. I think, if can recall for about R250,000 which today (inflation tables) is approx R6,657,800...he got 13% commission fees but lost it when the yacht was impounded at Royal Cape (or Simonstown) cannot remember... later by police as it was with illicit and stolen money.
Their misdeeds finally caught up with them and police impounded the yacht. McCall was surrounded, I think in Houghton in Joburg and died in a shoot out.
Stander was in Cape Town and managed to forge a passport with different names and got to Florida in USA.
He was stopped by US cops because he bought a second hand car and drove without licence disc...a fatal mistake for a relatively minor offence. He had become so cock-sure and negligent and that was his undoing. A shoot out with US cops ended his life there and he was cremated there.
