This is a mess - that Treaty was never debated in any Parliament and none of the leaders who signed it had approval from their various Parliaments to sign it. When the matter is reported to their Parliaments all hell will break loose.
Does not look as a democratic basis to deal with a treaty. The signatories knew what was coming - why not deal with it on the normal basis of getting Parliamentary approval before signing. I can see trouble coming in numerous countries when Parliament has to confirm the treaty. The UK Netherlands, Denmark, Germany and France are just a few of the countries where trouble is expected because of the Treaty,
Take for instance Germany
Parties in Germany
Total 709 seats
- 200 seats
(CDU) - -
32,9%
153 seats (SPD)
- 24,6%
94 seats (AfD) 12.6%
80 seats (FDP)
- 10,7%
69 seats (Left) - 9,2%
67 seats (Greens)
- 8,9%
46 seats (CSU) - 4,6%
The above stemmed from the Parliamentary election in 2017.
For many years West
Germany was governed by coalition Governments
mainly under either the CDU or the SPD. In the main the parties involved since 2004 were the CDU, the SPD and the CSU
However various state elections have been held since and the
position became more and more uncertain.
The examples are as follows:-
Hesse
In Hesse the CDU support dropped to 27,9% and the SPD to 19,8% and the greens also 19,8%. However, the AfD – who never had seats in the
Hesse parliament gained 13.9%
The big losers were the CDU losing 9,8% compared
to the previous election and the SPD
10,8%
The main gain was by the AfD -
13% and the Greens 11,2%
Bavaria
The result was a disaster
for the Central German Government – the Alliance Partner the CSU lost 10,4%
support and the SPD lost 10,6% support,
while the AfD gained 10.2%
SUMMARY
Merkel came out of the 2017 elections looking very bad. Her party support slipped by circa 9% and whereas the SPD (who themselves lost 11,2% support) refused initially to form a coalition
Government with the CSU and ultimately
caved in.
The disastrous results
in the State election caused Merkel to
announce her retirement as CDU leader (Chairperson) and the CDU had to elect a new leader. The
chosen one is Kramp-Karrenbauer -
an ally of Merkel.
However, the Party is badly divided and it is not assured that
the CDU will vote for the Treaty – they are
terrified by the threat posed by the AfD
and the Alliance Partners (CSU) Will never vote for the Treaty,
So will the treaty pass in the German
Reichstag? I would say it w ill not since the major parties could
easily lose their relevance in future elections
I CAN EASIILY DO A SIMILAR ANALYSIS ANALYSIS FOR EVERY COUNTRY - BUT GERMANY IS THE BIG FISH IN EUROPE AND IF THEY SNEEZE THE WHOLE OF EUROPE WILL SNEEZE.
