My brother and I have been having a fierce argument about which was the best cover song of all time.

He can't get beyond Guns n Roses version of Knockin' on Heaven's Door and I've suggested the Ramones version of Out of Time, Eva Cassidy's Fields of Barley and Johnny Cash's Hurt (also a candidate for most gut-wrenching song ever recorded).

We both agree the cover has to be an improvement on the original which is where I have the issue with GnR's Knockin' on Heaven's Door but please let me know if you know of any great covers we should also consider.

PS We've already discarded well-known honourable mentions like Nirvana's The Man Who Sold the World, Jimi Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower, Jeff Buckley's (or Rufus Wainwright's) version of Hallelujah, Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You (Linda Ronstad's version is better) and Leona Lewis's Run.

Mark of Cain's cover of X's Degenerate boy

Marilyn Manson's cover of Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus

Placebo's version of the Pixies Where is my mind (Ok its not better than the original but its just as good)

Devo's cover of The Rolling stones Satisfaction

Placebo's cover of Kate Bush's Running up that Hill

Red Hot Chilli Peppers version of Stevie Wonders Higher Ground

And can I add God Save the Queen by the Sex Pistols, It only borrowed the main chorus line but I think it should be played as the English national anthem as it is one hell of a great song

I can already tell you I like Placebo's version of Where is my Mind a lot . . . but I do love the original by the Pixies and I'm not sure they did anything that different with it.

Agree its a straight cover but I prefer Brian Molko singing it, could listen to either version anytime. A true master piece of music for sure

Nice thread idea Rooiter. There are many good covers, but the one that stands out for me is Pearl Jam's cover of Last kiss. I think it may top Hurt as the most gut wrenching song ever. Eddie Vedder is not renowned as the best vocalist in rock music, but his quivering voice makes the emotion of the song palpable. Here, give it a listen. This video also has the lyrics. Very moving!

A couple of notable mentions for me, Spiderbait's cover of Black Betty, Ugly Kid Joe's cover of Cats in the cradle, and the very obvious but no less brilliant cover of Sound of silence by Disturbed. There are many more, but these are just the ones off the top of my head.

Not a full cover since it's a finger style version of a rock song, but here t is. A personal favorite.

Igor Presnyakov - Aerials(SOAD)

Chris Cornell - Billie Jean.

Milow - Ayo Technology

The Lumineers - Naive Melody(Talking Heads)

Oh, thanks Rooi!

I'm now into my second hour of sitting in the morning sun in my jocks, listening to covers through some Bang&Olufsen headphones.

Fuck it! I'm lighting a joint and making it three hours hahaha

There goes Saturday :)

bluebok, I liked Last Kiss, but I think what disqualifies it as a contender for best cover is the fact that the original is not very well known.
As for title of most gut-wrenching, yes, the lyrics make me want to go slit my wrists with a rusty blunt razorblade but the music's a bit too upbeat. Maybe we should start a thread for most gut-wrenching song? I have a few other candidates.
Plum, thanks. Igor Presnyakov - wow! I nearly didn't even bother with your Chris Cornell cover because I really, really, really can't stand Michael Jackson but I must admit I liked it and it's not only a good cover but possibly the greatest improvement on any original ever! A million times better than the whiny, high-pitched kiddy-fiddler's original.
You can safely light a second spliff. The game only kicks off at 10 tonight.

Rooi

Took about two years of playing guitar to realise that fingerstyle playing was my thing.

Seeing guys like Igor and some of the Spanish lads killing it always leaves me awestruck.

I've never given a shit about celebs dying, but Chris Cornell's death got me man. Especially since I just by chance 're-watched the Pearl Jam 20 documentary weeks prior. One of his quotes from the documentary...

"Oh, you don't like solos? Ok, we're gonna put a seven minute solo into the song. How's that?"

And then there is Disturbed's Sounds of Silence. ( Great choice Blue) There are lots of great covers, too difficult to choose just one.  Rooi, from your choices, I'll go for Cash and Lewis.

Love it!
I certainly don't get as upset as some people when football club owners or politicians buy the farm but I was pretty choked up when David Bowie, Leonard Cohen and Freddie Mercury died and I know I'm going to be broken if legends like Mick Jagger or Bob Dylan go before I do.
