It was not hard to look like a shining star after four years of former US president Donald Trump, but President Joe Biden has exceeded expectations in his first 100 days.

The official 100th day in office was April 30, but one of Biden’s most impressive decisions was announced just five days later – one that matters to South Africa and the developing world.

On Wednesday, the Biden administration announced that it was in support of waiving intellectual property protections for Covid-19 vaccines, which was a breakthrough for international efforts to suspend patent rules.

With the pandemic raging in India and Latin-America, and a third wave expected in our own country, the decision has the potential to be lifesaving for many. South Africa and India have been pushing for a temporary waiver of intellectual property rights, so that countries can address the pandemic, and vaccines can be made a public good.

At the recent G7 Summit, some countries pushed back against the proposal, arguing for free markets and open economies – which were never in dispute. South Africa and India have never challenged the notions. But the pandemic is an emergency, and as Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor said in an interview on Wednesday with Christiane Amanpour: “We need to meet the challenge confronting all of us because all of us are unsafe if one of us is unsafe. We don’t want to develop complex new variants.”

The US had been a major holdout at the World Trade Organization (WTO) to suspend intellectual property rights in an effort to ramp up vaccine production. But Biden had been under pressure to support the proposals, even from many congressional Democrats. Biden finally took a decision in the interest of the greater public good, something Trump was unlikely to ever do.

Katherine Tai, Biden’s US Trade Representative said on Wednesday: “This is a global health crisis, and the extraordinary circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic call for extraordinary measures. The administration believes strongly in intellectual property protections, but in service of ending this pandemic, supports the waiver of those protections for Covid-19 vaccines.” Now it is up to the WTO to hammer out an agreement in upcoming negotiations.

The US could do a lot more in terms of supporting the developing world with vaccines. Promises of sending 60 million unused AstraZeneca doses to developing countries is hardly sufficient. Less than 2% of the world’s Covid-19 vaccines have been administered in Africa, and the continent is in dire need of assistance.

What Biden has done in his own country in terms of rolling out Covid-19 vaccinations is nothing short of phenomenal. When he took office in January this year, Biden pledged 100 million vaccine doses in his first 100 days. At the end of March, he doubled that commitment. While Trump only rolled out 16 million vaccine doses, Biden has rolled out 220 million in his first 100 days in office. He has taken the politics out of vaccines and mask wearing, and delivered on his promises in an understated and humble way. He has not praised himself for the accomplishments, but rather told people “it is because of you”. The approach has been a welcome contrast to the politics of ego perpetrated by Trump.

The mass vaccination rollout in the US has changed cities across the country from ghost towns to buzzing hubs of commerce and life again. Take a city like Nashville, the home of country music. Just months ago, bars and restaurants were empty, businesses were hardly functioning and people were holed up in their homes as the pandemic surged, causing devastation and untold suffering among the local population. By the end of last month,l most of the population had been vaccinated, and bars are full again and staying open until 3am, weddings are taking place everywhere, and people have taken their lives back. Many credit Biden for the turnaround.

Biden has also succeeded in reviving the US economy with the $1.9 trillion (about R27 trillion) stimulus package that he signed in March.

In his address to the US Congress, Biden was correct when he said that he had created 1.3 million new jobs – more jobs in the first 100 days than any president on record.

Biden easily relates to average working-class people, and his infrastructure and family plans have broad backing. His initiatives on preschool, public community college, paid family and medical leave, and home care are popular, as are his proposals to increase taxes on corporations and the wealthy in order to pay for infrastructure and education.

Biden had entered office promising a real commitment to diversity, and he has made good on this promise if one looks at his confirmed nominees, in which there are a higher proportion of women and non-whites than any of his three predecessors. Lloyd Austin is the first African-American to be the secretary of defence, Deb Haaland will be the first Native-American to be a Cabinet member and secretary of the interior, Janet Yellen the first woman to be secretary of the Treasury, and Alejandro Mayorkas will be the first Latino and immigrant to run the Department of Homeland Security. These appointments have been hailed as trail-blazing.

Biden has also taken initiatives to end police brutality and root out systemic racism in the US system. The moves come as anger grows over the killing of another Black man, Daunte Wright, who was stopped by police just miles from where George Floyd was killed last May. While there are good intentions on the part of the Biden administration, there appears to be no immediate path to broad national reform according to activists. The Biden administration will put its weight behind a broad reform bill known as the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, while revamping the Justice Department, which holds the administration’s most tangible power over police departments.

What Biden has successfully been able to achieve is to undo much of what Trump did through executive orders, and by April 23 he had undone 62 of the 219 executive orders signed by the former president. He has recommitted the US to the Paris Climate Change Agreement, reversed the US exit from the WHO, and stopped construction of the border wall. Biden is more popular than Trump was on any day of his presidency.

Most of Biden's achievements is to the benefit of other countries like China for instance as to patent rules,.   He has done it by  presidential proclamation and one of those cause the crisis on the southern border of the USA/

In fact he has been weak and what he caused is a massive rise of crime in the USA and  especially  in  the USA.

One of his first proclamations caused 80 000   job losses and a 20% increase in petrol prices countrywide with the increase of the cost of living for consumer goods rising proportionally.

The mass roll out of vaccination was planned and started by Trump and the main component  of the vaccines was produced  under the previous  administration before Biden was President,

The rest of the issues raised is the normal  propaganda  by the pro-Biden press and totally irrelevant to the interests of the people.

A chaotic period that had ghastly consequences and will even be clearer with time.   The US has been weakened and the people of Australia will soon be threatened by the Chinese,  expansion program,  Wait till China has annexed Taiwan and the Phillipines - the next  target on their agenda will be Australia and Biden will do nothing to prevent it.

Australia has fought alongside of America in every war outside of America. There is a healthy and meaningful relationship between the two countries going back many years. Anyway, the re's no point in debating you if you can't stick to the relevant issue.

Amen.

Denny, do us a favour, when you're willing to discuss the actual statistics then make posts like this.

In other words, never make posts likes this.

Hilarious.....Trump went out and pushed for vaccines at the end of 2020, setting aside bureaucratic barriers and rejecting arguments that it should take another nine months. The Committee called Biden was 100% in the 18 months camp but by luck found themselves right at the start of the manufacturing ramp up.

And now Trump supposedly would never have suspended intellectual property rights and the Committee called Biden gets credit for being dragged kicking and screaming to to that decision.

Plum...nail on the head with your ps.

I would prefer countries paid to use the license of the vaccines, instead of giving it away for free. This would speed up production around the world while making sure the inventors are handsomely rewarded.
The healthcare countries need profits to ensure they can tackle the next pandemic, while also contributing to the ongoing development of other health-related drugs.
However, at least Biden is thinking about it as a world issue, as the longer the virus is around, the more chances it is going to have to mutate.

Denny

Wait another two years or so and see what happens.     Biden has been bribed by China and the new woke idea  relates to condemning whatever is fact in history  -  so  Australia's alliance will be pissed  in by the Socialists ruining Washington,

Should China attack  Australia she would have no allies  and if they do have one it will be India  and not the USA.    You better do what Trump did  and sign a defense alliance with India  and Auatralia should also look at Russia asap. - because the Indians are also threatened  by China and battles between the two has already occurred and Russia may also be under threat.

The world stability is precarious at present  and it is made worse by the present feeble Government in the USA,

Agreed Dense, good to have a competent US president in the White House instead of the bungling and self-serving idiot he took over from . . . and the approval ratings confirm this.

The Trumpanzees are so astoundingly stupid they still think that the conceited fool - the same fool who thought Covid-19 was a hoax, who thought injecting bleach into the bo dy was a good idea, who refused to wear a mask in public and who had no vaccination rollout plan in place when he stormed out of the White House like a sulky child - they still believe that moron played some part in the vaccines being developed in other countries.

Hard to believe anyone could be that blinkered or brainwashed but there you go.

CleverMike, SARS, MERS, and COVID are all Coronaviruses all from China.
The logical consensus at the moment is that it is unintentional, and the result of wild animals that have not been processed- but are available in wet markets.

Why would China want to infect themselves with this virus, unless they already had a vaccine.
As it is, the vaccines for Covid from China do not even appear to work very well.
They have certainly suppressed the true number of their infections and deaths, but that does not mean they created the virus intentionally as a biological weapon - as you appear to think. (Along with the other dolts from Fox News).

All you gotta do is show us the host species, Viskop.

Oh that's right, they still haven't found it. How long has it been now? Closing in on 18 months.

It was made in a lab and due to poor control it escaped.

China have lied about it since.

All you have to do is show us there were no host species.
Neither of us has access to this information, other than reported "versions" in the media.

Still, if a country had wanted to create a biological viral weapon, they could modify it to look like it was originally from a host animal/s.

Research has been conducted in Wuhan on Covid viruses for many years, and sponsored by the US government. That does not mean Covid escaped from these labs.

Given SARS and MERS were from China, it is no wonder funding was given to a lab in China to do research into Coronaviruses.

There is no evidence it escaped from a lab, but conversely, this does not rule out the possibility either. There is no conclusive evidence to confirm anything.

Once again you are allowing emotional bias to think for you- by wanting to believe it was incompetence or corruption by the Chinese.

Lol Tante comes in hot with some copy paste action and immediately runs for the hills. Entirely unwilling to deliver so much as a ounce of his own opinion. Gosh, are we that frightening?

I wonder if he knows that we all have our own internet access and can read articles ourselves.

Viskop, I have no beef with China. I dislike communism 100% though. The CCP can go F themselves.

My leaning on where Covid originated is simple...here are some points.

* Only a handful of labs in the world working with this virus. And by chance the outbreak starts in the same city as one of those labs. Wanna work out the odds on that coincidence?

* China would have found the host by now if there was one. They did so for previous viruses.

* Patient/s zero never stepped foot inside the wet markets in Wuhan.

* SARS escaped from a Beijing lab...twice! Somehow, I don't think you knew that.

* The Wuhan Virology Lab was testing a Virus that matches 2019-nCov

* It was confirmed that the lab had recently created a new corona virus.

So we know they were working on and creating exactly this type of virus/es . There is a history of poor safety control in Chinese labs, as evidenced by previous escapes...and they've still never found the host animal/s.

You have nothing going for you in the animal mutation narrative while many facts point to a lab escape. It's pretty clear that you're basically projecting when you use the words emotional bias.

It may have come from an animal but the circumstantial evidence points heavily, very heavily, towards a lab escape.

No? Ok, then let's hear the counter evidence.

It never ceases to amaze me how dumb and ill informed the stinker group are.

I must stir myself tomorrow and post information that crushes these mongs.

I fear though it's all above their pay grade.

Trump got bamboozled by the medics. The vaccines are deadly as the stats are now showing.

Night to all.

I am not saying did it deliberately happened - but the story put out was that the virus came from live animals sold at the wet  market  in Wuhan.   Initially the  the Chinese stated the virus  came from  bats, then from another live species.    The problem is wet market in Wuhan only sold fish and no live animals - there is plenty of proof of the latter statement/

What is even worse is the fact that an inspection done by the US  when Trump was President reported that in view of the nature of  research done   the security measures was not of an acceptable standard,

Some time back there was a decision  taken that this type  of research should be banned, There was only one laboratory in the USA doing that kind of  research and the facility was closed  shortly thereafter,   However, the US Government agreed to make money available to enhance other research at the  University of Texas .   The famous Dt Faucci ILLEGALLY transferred  the money to be used  to  the Wuhan laboratory for  especially virus research.

The USA did not fund  the virus development in the Wuhan laboratory - Dr Faucci did it all on his own.

Compare the UK, formerly worst in Europe (because of demographics) and Germany, formerly the best in Europe. UK cases are now 1/20th of German cases. Because the vaccines work.

I wrote about the proven origin of the virus  - but wondered whether the escape of the virus from the Wuhan laboratory was accidental or deliberate.    China has been a Communist dictatorship since 1949 and under Mao Zedung there were 72 million Chinese killed by the State  and thae attitude always was dictatorial without any regard to the people of China.    They would not care if 500 000  or more of the Chinese were killed by any virus - it would mean less people in a grossly  over-populated country.    The more killed - the less the chances of opposition from within the country,

As to the world scene the Chinese are striving for supremacy in the world - both economically and militarily.    They must have known that the virus would struck the world economy badly and that would cause a dent in the democratic countries that could be used to undermine democracy as a political system in the world.

China had a serious problem military wise and that was the USA under Trump,    Trump would take no nonsense from them - especially when he scrapped the trade agreement between China and the USA and started improving the weapns systems of the US army,    Her put bans on Chinese involved  in destruction of the last vestiges of Democracy in Hong Kong and also insisted on a new trade agreement that would not be a sell-out to China to replace the Obama agreement,    The problem for them was made easier for them by bribing Biden  in the form of an "investment"  in Biden's son company of $1,5 billion.    That was obviously a bribe and happened after Biden paid a visit  to China to finalize the  previous trade agreement and  Biden on his return claimed that China was no threat to the USA o any other countries in the world.

That being the case the Chinese had a huge stake in getting rid of Trump at all costs.    It is mysterious how the virus appeared at the start of the US election campaign with the US economy booming and unemployment rates the lowest it ever was.    It was in China's interest to get rid of Trump by all means possible and replace him with the bribed  Biden.   The virus in fact  came near to destruction of economies of a large number of countries in the west and  also of the economy of the USA .

The obvious main target if the Chinese was to get rid of Trump by any means possible  nd replace him with the bribed  and they have achieved that goal by replacing him with Biden.   The Chinese regard bribing as a deadly sin and they despise bribed people.   In the frost international meeting between   China and the US  they shit all over the US representatives at the meeting - something they would never have dared to do when Trump was President.

The election of Biden as President created an unstable international environment and open the way up to China  for all kinds of action - military and otherwise in the Pacific Ocean area,   They know Biden - who was forced to retain the bans initiated by Trump - will do nothing to curb any action by China and will not in practice  mean anything, since the bans will not be enforced administratively.     The Biden administration is weak and at the mercy of the Chinese.

That is why the safety of countries in the Pacific Coast area - especially those not under Communist regimes - are in serious danger of Chinese attacks without any fear of any  USA  counter-response to protect the countries under threat,

   .
