Russia’s assets have been frozen in many places. That amounts to some $300 billion. Small potatoes compared to Apple’s $ 3 trillion in market cap, but for Russia a pretty big number. Some $ 200 billion is deposited in Europe.
For now those assets are just sitting there, but there is a justifiable feeling that Russia should pay for the damage it caused. It might even act as a deterrent if rogue nations like Russia realized they might have to pay for the lives and assets they are blowing up.
But like sovereign borders asset sanctity is an important element in international commerce. So two watered down versions have been suggested. The first that returns on these assets ….some $10 billion a year be used in Ukraine’s favor. The second that the principal be used as collateral to provide Ukraine with low cost construction loans.
Ultimately though I hope we get a legal answer. Russia convicted of war crimes and a court verdict in Ukraine’s favor for as much as it will take to rebuild their country.
The departure of Putin as the real guilty party and an agreement with the succeeding government, would make that more likely and eminently fair. And the fact that the chicken is just sitting there, ready to be plucked, makes it easy to execute.
