As stated on another thread, it's worthwhile remembering what Chinese people are capable of.
Perhaps as a reminder that governments are fleeting but genetics and culture evolve yet never go away.
Instead of merely listing all their contributions here, i'd simply suggest going to this wiki page. Damn it's a long list.

What i'd prefer to do is talk about one specific technoligical progression as i find it quite fascinating. I'm assuming that they are part of the same progression but i may be wrong.
The ancient Chinese were expert deep well diggers and builders(also on the wiki list above). *
Great, it meant they could supply fresh and clean water reliably.
Digging these deep wells meant they'd encounter problems, resources and physical phenomenon related to the task.
For example, they found natural gas. They proceeded to use air tight bamboo piping to run the gas to the first ever gas cylinders which were transported over long distances. Gas fired furnaces and lighting was the result from which further innovstions were born.
They also found that, when inside these wells, resonance from within the earth was more apparent. They made use of the manner in which vibrations travel through solid material in order to build earthquake warning systems.
It starts with a need for water and ends in gas lights and the seismometer(132AD). That's almost two millenia ago.
Not too huge a leap when you simply look at the sumamry of ideas. It's when you consider engineering and ingenuity involved that one is staggered. The craftsmanship and the precision of related components and devices is just amazing.
Obviously this is just a small slice of the pie but it's one that i find intresting.
How truly stupid to hold back any society as capable as them.
I'm certainly no expert when it comes to Chinese politics but i do wonder what good an oppressive government is doing them. One can't help but think that they're nee dlessly living under a boot.
