The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will be testing for the coronavirus in people in five major cities who show up at clinics with flu-like symptoms but who test negative for the seasonal varieties.

If that testing shows the virus has slipped into the country in places federal officials don't know about, "we've got a problem," Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told USA TODAY's Editorial Board Monday.

Short of that, Fauci says skip the masks unless you are contagious, don't worry about catching anything from Chinese products and certainly don't avoid Chinese people or restaurants.

"Whenever you have the threat of a transmissible infection, there are varying degrees from understandable to outlandish extrapolations of fear," Fauci said.

Government agencies, including Fauci's own at the National Institutes of Health, are being inundated with calls and emails from nervous people, just as they were during the Ebola and SARS scares.

I saw a video recently by a leading medical doctor in South Korea. He was asked if masks helped people walking in the streets to avoid the virus, and he said: "Of course, why else would doctors wear them in hospitals".
I see Trump recently suggested that wearing masks could be a good idea. The problem is many western countries have no masks anyway. - So at the moment, it is not really an option for Western countries anyway.

The problem is that the Chinese, Japanese and South Koreans have a serious air pollution problem as well and they have been using the masks for other purposes before.  So household;ds p[robably possess the masks before the coronavirus outbreak.

I have not bought a mask and tried to get one - but all the shop assistants and cahiers in Riversdale wear masks - so they must be available somewhere ,

In my view he has been all over the map, note my posting above. But because he showed some resistance to Trump he immediately became the hero of the media and a few gullible people on here.

Other than washing your hands and social distancing I can’t think of one useful thing he has said....and based on his comments above made in mid February he provided very little insight into the scope of the problem.

The progress eg on testing and ventilators has come from Trump engaging the private sector not from this arrogant little man. For 10 days or so while he was not center stage he was sulking behind others at the briefings. Miraculously when the quarantine was extended he became animated and jovial.

Dr Fauci on Face the Nations:

MARGARET BRENNAN: Because the WHO has been criticized, perhaps being too careful around the Chinese government in their part of the U.N. agency. They receive international funding. China has tremendous power over them. Is that criticism fair?

DR. FAUCI: You know, I don't know if it's fair or not, but certainly it's been spoken about. I mean, clearly, the director of WHO, Dr. Tedros, is really an outstanding person. And under very difficult circumstances, I think he's doing a very good job.

Dr Fauci on the Hill:

Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), said Sunday the American public shouldn’t worry about the coronavirus outbreak in China.

“It’s a very, very low risk to the United States,” Fauci said during an interview with radio show host John Catsimatidis.

From CNBC:

Fauci credits “good public health measures” in the United States for helping to stop “sustained transmission” of the virus in America.

“As the entry into the United States of potentially infected people is diminished because of the travel restrictions on both sides ... I think you are going to see a dampening down” of U.S. cases, he added.
