Probably the best Australian movie made. Lovely film about the loss of innocence, friendship and bonds between comrades in battle although anti British and historically inaccurate. My great uncle Cliff was a decorated captain that fought there in Turkey...sadly I never met him as he died in 1958 in London of a heart attack. He also played rugby for SA against the British Isles in 1910 in 2 tests. There were only 3 tests of which the Springboks won 2. He was also a magistrate in Pietermaritzburg in Natal, then  a consul in Argentina and in England he designed ice skates, a design still used today. He was my grandads elder brother, was a son of Irish doctor immigrated to SA, born here in Colesberg in the Karoo, went to SACS and also played rugby in Tvl for Diggers.

Gallipoli was one of Mel Gibson's best performances along with Braveheart, another classic and close to my heart. Beautiful theme, I agree.

Another Australian similar movie, ie in location in Turkey and beginning in Australia was The Water Diviner, starring Russel Crowe and a Russian actress, her name slips my memory also a favourite of mine. He loses his wife in Australia, through suicide...she drowns herself in the farm dam. He has 3 son's who volunteer to fight in WW1 in Turkey. He looses 2 or them, killed in action, in un-named graves as he goes over to find them and the missing third son, who was rumored to still be alive but whereabouts unknown. In his endeavours to find them, the grave locations and the alive missing son, he meets a Turkish girl and they fall in love...he continues his search to find his third son and eventually finds him through trying circumstances...the Turkish/Greek conflict that occurred then..

Here's a theme song from the movie, although not a classic, nevertheless a moving song.
