The BBC has an article out today on the fires set on the CT trains.....we used to ride those trains as school kids going to rugby or cricket matches without a thought about safety, they were as reliable as Big Ben. It's taken 25years, but it's now truly an African country. What a shame that the great experiment can't even work in RSA with the biggest head-start on the Continent. ......... Something mysterious, queasily spectacular, and extremely dangerous is happening in Cape Town. In the space of a few months, half of the city's entire stock of more than 80 suburban trains has been set on fire and taken out of action. That has prompted chaos and frustration for thousands of commuters, and deep unease for officials unsure if the arsonists are petty criminals, sophisticated gangs, or maybe even political forces seeking to discredit their rivals. Viral videos have shown a series of burning carriages - billowing with black smoke while electric cables crack and fizzle overhead - screeching to a gentle halt in different train stations in the South African port city, as commuters rush to escape the fires. So far, no-one has been hurt. How big is the problem? Yet despite growing pressure on investigators, and the introduction of undercover police on many trains, the authorities have yet to crack the mystery of Cape Town's burning trains. The impact on the city - still recovering from a crippling drought - has been severe. "In my mind there is some sort of campaign, or sinister force, that is behind this," said Brett Herron, who oversees the city's transport systems in the mayor's office. "For me, it's not random - it just seems to be too well orchestrated. We've had about 140 carriages destroyed [in] an almost weekly occurrence."

Ja Moz, it's absurd and the conspiracy theorist in me suspects an ulterior motive for these burnings...it's almost as if it's organised by pro's. (Edit, seems like Bret Heron agrees with me)

I have staff that makes use of trains to commute every day. There are no alternatives for them. The trains that do still run, looks like some of the old movies of trains in India, with more people on the outside of the trains than the inside.

Delays or absolute no service on some days are regular...not to forget the impact of cable theft too.

Going down like the Hindenburg it seems.

It's unfortunate. The gangs in Africa ruin things for everyone, and it does not help that the government itself is filled by corruption and backhanders.
The London riots were the first time the UK has experienced something like this. Pakistan offered to send a peace delegation to the UK to help out, given the UK always offer the same thing.

Shark, there is a huge difference between  a gang and a mob....and I'm not talking Italian Mob or Russian mob, more like lynch mob...necklace mob is probably more acurate. The people of Africa are suffering their own stupidity...blacks and whites alike.

There is another problem - the security services of PRASA have been privatized and the holding company belongs to one of Zuma's business partners.   Not gone out on tender also - so there is no security services and the billions go straight into the coffers of the looters.

That coupled to the wars between taxi-associations themselves and the attacking of any institution that impact negatively on their operations is the gist of the problems faced by all competing institutions.

The taxi bosses and  gangsterism are clear partners as well.

It is a nest of vipers that needs to be cleared out before the passenger trains will be operating properly without the burning of trains.

Bob, methinks you are close to the money. It was them who shot up the busses too, a few years ago. Absolutely no respect for anyone or anything with no regards for the law or law enforcement.

Remember reading during one of my visits home, early 00, about the taxi gangsters being blamed for virtually destroying  the bus service.

Vok, bet they don't pay much in taxes either .

Barbaric. It is like Al Capone's Mafia on steroids.  They are so hardcore they are untouchable, and probably have some of the police in their back pockets.

SB

You are right - but the issue goes much wider than having a couple of police in their pockets.

It has everything to do with State Capture.   Make sure the Police (all branches) are controlled and are protecting, aiding and abetting the crooks, rather than enforcing of the law.    Make sure that the National Prosecuting Authority does not function,   Make sure that the leading politicians keep on protecting the crooks.
