WASHINGTON – House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes confirmed ?on Sunday that ?the Justice Department could not provide evidence of wiretapping at Trump Tower — as the president? has alleged.
“Was there a physical wiretap of Trump Tower? No. But there never was,” Nunes (R-Calif.) told ?”?Fox News Sunday.?”
The Justice Department turned over a classified report to the Intelligence Committee Friday regarding surveillance in the 2016 election. Upon reviewing the report, Nunes says he stands by his earlier comments that there’s “no evidence” former President Obama issued a wiretap for Trump’s New York home and business.
The information we got on Friday continues to lead us in that direction,” Nunes said. “There was no FISA warrant that I’m aware of to tap Trump Tower.”
FBI Director James Comey will testify before the House Intelligence Committee Monday where he could debunk Trump’s wiretapping claims as well as allegations that the Trump campaign worked with the Russians to interfere in the US election.
Nunes said he’s seen “there’s no evidence of collusion” between Trump and the Russians to sway the 2016 election.
The committee leadership — and the president – remain concerned with leaks.
Nunes said the only crime that’s been committed is the leaking of conversations between former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn with the Russian ambassador. The FBI picked up the electronic surveillance as part of routine Russian monitoring and Flynn was forced to resign.
“We know that his name was unmasked and it was leaked out to the press,” Nunes said.
“The one crime that we know that has been committed is that one – the leaking of someone’s name through the FISA system,” Nunes said.
The White House has stood by Trump’s Twitter claim that Obama wiretapped him and evidence would be produced to vindicate him.
