Don't know how many of you are following the SA local elections but it's a very pleasant surprise to see the ANC struggling.
It's only in the metropolitan areas of course . . . that's because the vast majority of the population live out in the sticks and they don't see the corrupt ANC fatcats and their cronies driving around in supercars and ensuring that no tiny crumbs fall off the government table for the poor to pick up.
It remains to be seen what happens in Jo'burg. It's so close still with such a large percentage of votes already counted that we are almost certainly in for lots of recounts and claims of fraud or corruption. It's in the ANC's nature to besmirch the country's good name with accusations of electoral corruption (spot the irony!) rather than lose with any grace or dignity.
Two people who have really made an impression on me over the last few hours have been the new DA mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay Athol Trollip (sp?) who has answered every single question so far with style and conviction . . . and also that EFF guy who was asked about coalitions and gave an excellent answer . . . something about the EFF's ideology won't be compromised but that ideology is less important at a local level than it is at a national level. Here we're talking about giving people electricity, water and other services . . . and he finished by saying surely we can work together to do that.
Sadly, he seems to have a minority view on this within the EFF ranks. Julius Malema knows what a great position he's in . . . the corpulent clown is grinning from ear to ear as I type this . . . and he's said the EFF will not be forming any "coalitions or what what".
Interesting times ahead in the next few days.
Well done DA . . . and shame on those of you who could but didn't vote!!!
