What's happening in SA is very sad, but one thing it ain't is a surprise.

Here's a conundrum for you.

Say a politician steals R50,000,000. Assume also that this politician has an IQ of 82.

The lower an intellect, the lower one's ability to extrapolate and predict - this is fact.

It could be that it has nothing to do with morality and everything to do with stupidity. In other words, he's actually not able to look far enough down the road to the harm he is causing, or how much harm would be caused if more people behaved as he did.

I think that a society with a higher intellect has more people that can look down the road. And so there are enough people with an eye on the future that you naturally have lower instances of corruption and other destructive abuses of power. A greater sense of responsibility.

There is no country on earth with an IQ as low as ours that is doing even remotely well for themselves. In fact, anything below about 93 is a shitshow. South Africa is at 68.9.
