These "priests" are manipulating you. They are using techniques like cognitive dissonance to build upon your fears to make you need the reassurance of what they are selling.

I once shared a house and it included a priest and his wife. (South African priest).
He was studying to be a priest, and it was the equivalent of a doctrine. It included topics like rhetoric and persuasion, psychology, communications etc, etc.
