Donald Trump inauguration watched by 31m – MORE than Barack Obama in 2013

DONALD Trump’s inauguration as the 45th US president was watched by almost 31 million people in America, far more than watched Barack Obama’s last swearing-in four years ago.

A combined audience of 30.6million people watched the live coverage between 10am and 6pm (EST) across 12 broadcast and cable networks, according to official Nielsen figures.

The figure is 11m more than the audience that watched Mr Obama’s second inauguration four years ago when 20.6m in 2013.

The audience for Trump was bigger than either of his Republican predecessors George Bush and George W Bush.

Bill Clinton’s inauguration in 1993 was watched by a TV audience of 29.7m.

cherry-picking the most convenient data, as always,... a president's second swearing-in typically sees a drop-off in viewership,... Obama's first inauguration in 2009 was seen by 37.8 million people,... 7 million more,... almost a 20% more

Trvmp's inauguration's audience was the fifth,... since 1969,... considering first inaugurations Trvmp's had bigger audience than only both Bush-es' and Clinton's

Thin crowds and partially empty stands also dotted Mr Trump's inaugural parade route:

Hotels across the District of Columbia reported vacancies, a rarity for an inauguration.

Another good way of measuring attendance is looking at how many people used Washington's rail system during the inauguration.

As of 11am on Friday, 193,000 trips had been taken via the Washington Metro system. At the same hour eight years ago, at Mr Obama's first inauguration, there had been 513,000 trips. Four years later, there were 317,000.

In total, the Washington Metro told the Washington Post that 570,557 people took trips on Friday between 4am and midnight. By comparison, the totals for Mr Obama's inaugurations in 2009 and 2013 were 1.1 million and 782,000 respectively.
