I'm not too familiar with US politics and I tried Googling an answer but failed to find one plausible. Question is why do you have midterm elections on top of presidential elections? Would have thought that a term lasts for 4 years as it is in most western countries....eg Oz, NZ...UK.

It seems good to have midterm elections, just in case they are stuck with a really bad president- like Nixon.

Denny this explains it fairly well I think: 'Members of the House of Representatives serve two-year terms and are considered for reelection every even year. Senators however, serve six-year terms and elections to the Senate are staggered over even years so that only about 1/3 of the Senate is up for reelection during any election.' And of course the president is elected every four years. So you actually have 2 year/4 year and 6 year cycles running at the same time....which partially coincide every even year.
