....Erasmus Head, the globalists, the racists, the religious nutters, the atheist nutters.....it's the movie whisperers. That new cadre of male actors who have adopted whispering as the new in thing. Do people really whisper at each other? That combined with female croaking sans any breath are two of the most irritating new things out there........stop whispering, stop croaking.....it's a beautiful language, use it.

HasBeen-ou the level of intolerance from the left is thunderous. I have stopped communicating with certain friends in the States because of Trump......not because I'm a groupie on the issue, he is the antithesis of my style, but because I have gone off script by saying he is making progress on some important issues. It's just not time well spent to observe the bulging eyes, the shock, the gasps of indignation. These are adults mark you. I always thought debate was something to be encouraged.....it's not if it transgresses the globalist ideology. These same people no doubt have read about the Spanish Inquisition and the Salem Witch Hunts with shock. Little realizing the intolerance is the same, it's only the topic and the socially acceptable remedies that vary. It's a different view of the world, where hard work is not a requirement.....the latest pathetic example is the notion that every human being should get a 'salary' despite being unemployed. And laughably, while all this is going on, the living example Venezuela is collapsing before our eyes. Caracas was a decent City. I spent many a night at the Tamanaco hotel while visiting our local business. Nice hard working people...I shudder to think about their circumstances today. But no use grinding over it.... I did experience one weird incident in Caracas. We were in the hotel having dinner. Seated at a window table we faced towards the mountain, which was dark and covered in storm clouds. Suddenly, for an instant a cross appeared in the sky....and then it was gone. I asked my colleagues if anybody else had seen the cross. Nobody had and I retired a bit later just a little bemused. Had I imbibed a bit too much or had I been sent a message? The next morning the mystery was resolved, there was a large cross on that hill, which the concierge told me was illuminated at night. The clouds no doubt had parted, affording a brief glance.

Mozter, talking of movies, and in a similar vein to your gripe, is my pet hate. I am sorry to point this out to you, because now it will surely start to irritate you too, but here goes. The silence. It's the new "in thing" in movies and series that directors seem to think is artistic and cool. The inexplicable silence, where the camera stays glued to the actor's face, and he or she says nothing, when any normal person in that situation, whatever it may be, would be talking or screaming or whatever. These mysterious silences are so bloody annoying and unrealistic. I periodically find myself shouting just say or do something, at the TV!

Mozart...I understand your sentiments to some degree.

Bluebok...very seldom watch recent movies today but this is really weird...Hollywood produces absolute junk today...meaningless science fiction crap.

Couldn't help thinking of that great piece written by Paul Simon...or was it his partner Garfunkel

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silenceFools, said I, you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silenceAnd the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence

Yep great song.....Bloo I think the silence goes along with the suffering. So many modern movies entertain us with endless suffering eg The Revenant........a horrible movie not even saved by the greatest bear attack ever.

"the greatest bear attack ever". Bwahahahaha! So I'm not the only one that noticed! Utter crap, as are 99% of the movies coming out these days. The last movie I watched that actually left me impressed was Bucket List. Yes I'm only 39, and yes, that's how long it has been since I watched a movie of any substance.

I go to the movies about once a month with my youngest and have to say most are rubbish but the last one i enjoyed was The Martian with Matt Damon.

They at least tried to keep it factually correct and didnt turn it into a disaster movie every three minutes

Oh come now, Mozart. The Revenant was an excellent movie.

I have over 700 movies in my collection. Simply love escaping into their world.

Have you seen ...

"Brimstone" or "Wind River"? How about "Collateral Beauty" or "Darkest Hour". Another fantastic show is "Hacksaw Ridge".

There is plenty great shows out there.

Talking about a Grizzly bear ... have you seen "The Edge" with Anthony Hopkins?

The Edge...good movie, I enjoyed it...there were much better movies in the 1990's.

Incidentally, Mozart did you watch "The Water Diviner"...Russel Crowe...you said you intended to...I think most men and women too will enjoy this movie...especially those who have sons.

Others that some have missed that are really good...you can take my word for it are:

A Message in a Bottle...Kevin Costner (sorry mixed it up with Tin Cup which is rather silly...some golfers might enjoy this but I thought it very mediorce)

The Insider...Russel Crowe

As Good as it Gets...Jack Nicholson

The Thin Red Line...Sean Penn

Enemy at the Gates.

Stalin...Robert Duvall...not very accurate according to my wife but I found it entertaining...Duvall is always good from an acting performance (not The Death of Stalin which is nonsense)

Enjoyed "The Deerhunter" is one of my all-time top movies, also thought "Breaker Morant" and "Gallipoli" were great.

Heya Mr Clean, De Niro is one of my favorite actors, just so happened I bumped into a Chess nut who is his Driver. Apparently there's no parking in the city of New York so the ones who can afford it have full time Drivers. We had some great chats, says he never talks work and hopes to meet me when I rock up in his neck of the woods. I guess that's more than enough reason to visit the Big Apple.

Got told the full history of Kwai Bridge while standing on a barge right next to that famous bridge.

It is a heart wrenching story, not far from there is an Ozzie war museum and cemetery.....boy you'd be struggling not to shed a tear. Our journey continued on the same railway track that was built by the prisoners of war....some of course lost their lives in the construction.

The Deer Hunter was a very moving film...probably De Niro's best and Walken was good too...I liked him when he was a younger actor...don't care too much for his older mafia type image...Casino was a very disturbing movie of thuggery but yes he's talented but like Pacino, Pesci and gang foul-mouthed.

Enjoyed all the late Paul Newman movies...Hud, Hombre,The Prize, Cool Hand Luke, The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean,

Also enjoyed Steve McQueen...The Sand Pepples (really good)...The Great Escape very entertaining too although the events were inaccurate and distorted Hollywood style.

Oh yes CC another excellent war movie was The Battle of the Bulge...Robert Shaw was excellent in this movie.

A short clip

Damn, this thread carried on some momentum since I last visited. Here are a couple of my favourites in no particular order. Some are a little obvious, but great none the less.
1. Braveheart2. Saving private Ryan3. Band of Brothers (I know it is a series, but it is the best series ever! In my opinion anyway)4. Full metal Jacket5. Platoon6. Enemy at the gates7. Shawshank Redemption (My all time favourite)8. Predator (Only the first one, the rest were rubbish) 9. Pulp Fiction10. Reservoir Dogs11. Lock stock and two smoking barrels12. Snatch13. Monty Python Life of Brian, and Search for the holy grail.14. Schindler's list
Just off the top of my head. The only movie I have watched recently that was worth watching was A quiet place. Not a great movie if you are going to watch critically, but very entertaining and some serious edge of the seat tension.
