….we have one member who claims he  knows a few old families and believes name dropping somehow elevates him to their status.   I have alwa ys found that an interesting concept, as if other families sprang out of the ether a generation ago. Nor do I have great respect for these later generations living off what their forebears created, often a useless bunch.

That said if name dropping is your thing I was reminded of a famous conversation that took place some 20 years ago at an institution I frequent. Three of the oldest members were reminiscing about the first time they flew in an aircraft. The first two told impressive stories, but the third topped them both.

His first flight took place on a private aircraft. He was picked up by Charles Lindbergh who flew them both to Detroit for a lunch with Henry Ford.

Now that’s impressive name dropping and the man that told the story undoubtedly thought the other two were not his social equals.
