Yep, not clickbait. Brain implants are almost here.
Musk was on Rogan yesterday. This guy has a habit of turning sci-fi into reality. Perhaps it's worth hearing what he had to say.
The motivation for his brain implants is to cure brain-related injuries and illnesses. He listed many. From epilepsy to blindness and lack of motor function. That's right, quadriplegics can have their brains connected across broken nervous bridges and have fully functioning limbs. The optical nerve can be completely severed and you'll still be able to see...better actually. Same goes for hearing and even Parkinson's.
The implant. A 25mmDia hole is drilled into the skill. A 25mmDia disc-shaped implant is inserted into the hold to replace the missing bone. Small wires are run from there to various parts of the brain. The implant has full wireless connectivity and charging capability.
The controversial bit. The technology allows for other functions and capabilities. "Save state", for your consciousness, will be possible. Then copy and paste state will be possible. In other words, transplanting consciousness.
Wireless brain to brain communication. Ja, basically technological telepathy. And the bit rate of this communication will be way beyond what our current system of words can do.
When? Musk said one year for the first implants to be tested and guessed at five years for the first wireless communication systems.
So, the inevitable finally happened.
"Hold my beer," said the engineer to the doctor.
I'm on the fence. Happy about the medical advances but having my brain connected to a network is a little frightening.
Kudos to me for being onto the story earlier in the week with a longer post where I speculated about exactly these this technology.
Never say I'm not first with the news.
