The water tanker mafia is entrenching itself in many municipalities across South Africa, causing chaos by deliberately disrupting the water supply to secure tenders. 

While this mafia has been prevalent in KwaZulu Natal for over a year, offshoots are starting to spring up in the economic hub of Gauteng, which prolonged water outages have plagued. 

The use of water tankers in Gauteng has skyrocketed as increased demand for water and deteriorating infrastructure have seen multiple areas go weeks without the precious resource. 

This has resulted in the rise of a ‘water tanker mafia’ that profits from these supply disruptions, with Tshwane being particularly hard hit. 

Themba Fosi, head of utilities, regional operations, and coordination for Tshwana, said the municipality spends around R98 million on water tankers annually. 

“The water tanker mafia is being felt across the city, particularly in Bronkhorstspruit where, in several instances, we found our valves being tampered with,” he said. 

“There is a huge amount of vandalism, and you see this is manmade and not due to infrastructure failure. Eventually, this leads to water tankers being the order of the day.” 

“We have instances where invoices from water tankers are questionable. This tends to be a challenge for us because, in some instances, documents are falsified.”

Fosi explained that there were numerous instances across Tshwane where water pipes and valves had been tampered with or broken. 

“These are the things we have found out as the city and the Tshwane metro police department. We also receive tip-offs from the community that they have seen some water tanker guys doing some shady work at our reservoirs or fire hydrants.” 

“That’s information that is coming through. However, we don’t have the capacity to conduct an intense investigation. We rely heavily on the police when cases are lodged through them so that they can conduct investigations for us.”

Water scientist Dr Anthony Turton warned that the collapse of infrastructure has resulted in the water tanker mafia being entrenched in South African municipalities. 

“This is part of a new trend where we can see that our infrastructure is not in healthy shape at all, and politicians are only waking up now,” Turton said. 

This crisis has been exploited by the water tanker mafia, which deliberately sabotages infrastructure to win or prolong contracts to supply water to affected areas. 

“There is a thriving tanker mafia in KZN that actively sabotages the water infrastructure. They do this to continue and prolong their contracts with the municipalities to provide water tankers across communities that need water,” Turton said.

He added that these tanker suppliers do not source their water from safe, potable sources. Instead, they take unsafe water from dams or rivers as they are paid per tanker. 

“These elements thrive on chaos, and they need to be investigated with urgency.” 

This mafia is among several groups with a vested interest in ensuring the supply of water is disrupted in South Africa. Turton warned that other groups see these disruptions as a way to foment social unrest. 

“It is well-known across South Africa that the tanker mafias are very well entrenched,” he said. 

“But, realistically, there are many vested interests in disrupting the system that may serve the interests of certain entities but not the national interest.”

He mentioned that acts of sabotage on water infrastructure are often a precursor to widespread social unrest. 

“What we do know is during the 2021 looting in KZN, the precursor to that was tampering with valves and infrastructure. In fact, they destroyed valves in some municipalities.” 

“We have seen videos of activists damaging water valves and infrastructure during recent unrest in Durban.”

“This could well be a part of a trend, and it is important we get on top of this. This has the potential to be a national security concern.”

I know abou the Bilding Mafia and the Eater Mafia - but not the Stellenbosch Mafia.    Stellenbosch is a bit of a rogue settment due to teh 25 000 stidents at the University, b=but is more knwn for being the area where billionaires and millionaires pefer to live and privte security thrives.  Do the Mafia must have something to do with that,    The Muniipality includ Framschhoek wher  Ruprt staya - but also a host of foreign billionares and milionnaires live,

Something like Palm Beach in Florida in the USA 0 but not as expensive.   .   .         

What happened to the Broederbond ?

I never knew anything about them and I don't know now.    However, the rich in Stemmenbisch never belomged to that lot - since for instance Anton Rublev was very critical of Botha when he was President.  Not surprising Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands and Anton Rupert started the Wiorld Wildlife Association - were close friends but .Queen Juliana - Prince Bernard's wife - was very liberal and against apartheid,   Her daughter  Princess  Irene now lives near Graaf Reinette where she operates a community assitance program on her huge farm and the rest is a private game reserve. 

Rupert set the tone in Stellenbosch and his wife Gaynor and sister own the Drakenstein race horse breeding farm and a hell of a lot of top class racehorses.     That is alo a money making machine.   They have five stallioans and charge R200 000 per civer of mares got pregnant  and each of the stallons cover on average 20 mares per month  That means an income of R4 million from each Stallion per month - a neat income  of R24 million a month.- e say R250 million a year fo lesser coverage,.

Gaynor Rupert and her sister  cover all the race price money on Kings Plate day which probably run to R40 million plus - but it also helps if one of the racehorses they own won the main race winner of R2,2 million and one of their horses got in third.

Another thing the Ruperts are invovled in is rugby - Rupert and Motsepe owns 74,5% of the Bulls franchise and ran a sport development programme for Children whom they select countrywide and fund their schooling at Paul Roos high school    One of their "project" is Da mian Willemse.          

 The corrupt ANC has made it easy for organized crime to prosper in South Africa...the are involved in all these crime syndicates and actively enabling it.

Although the so called Stellenbosch Mafia should probably not be included in that list.

Not sure about that one - Beeno will probably believe so.   Motsepe sister - a medical doctor - is he wife of Ramaphosa.    The two are the main funders of the DA and ANC respectively.   When they say jump the parties ask "How High?"

They probably have the main say n the formation of the present coalition Government n SA - which thus far seems to eb working out quite well - the enwspapers here has found nothing to cause upheavels.   

What is clear is that both has huge interests of some Chinese companies like Ten Cent and they are partners in crime iro BRICS - so maybe not on the World Economic Forum conttolling the US and EU Governments at present.    

What is also commn knowledge is that Rupert had the conolling interest in ownership of the Saracens Ruby Club in London - but he sold that one about four uyears ago.   When they got control of the Bulls Rugby Club they appointed Schalk Brits as their manager of ther rugby interests  and he is the one effectivcely controlling he Bulls management.    The story told by Brits is that he wanted to retire from rugby in 2017 and Rupert told him to remain with Saracenss for two years because he had "big plans" for him in future,   That was before Rupert and Montsepe got control of the Bulls - it was sitll under negotiation at the time,    The moment Brits got off the plane after the 2019 RWC e netered service with Rupert and Montsepe immediately.    

Motsepe and Rupert decided on apponting White as the Bulls Director of Rugby and Head Coach.    That is why Whjte had to get past his passion for forward domination  and start geig rid of some backline players who could not play backline rugby such as Morkel Steyn and now has some very prominent players like Goosen and Arendse, as well as some  newer backline players  that plays for he Bulls at present.

Rupert also has the major shareholding in Cie Financiere Richemont - a compay registered in Lichtenstein with major operations in Switzerland.   When the Covid's vaccines came out - Rupert and his family used his private jet to fly to Switzerland to receive the vaccination.   There was quite an outcry in the Swiss press about that one - but it then turned out he owned the clinic where the Ruperts went for vaccination.   So another 'No-no" in Beeno's shit list.
