Twelve months on from that very tweet, more than 225,000 Americans have died of Covid-19, and over 8 million have been infected from a virus whose threat to public health has been downplayed by Donald Trump, the US president.

Only this week, former president Barack Obama mentioned a "pandemic playbook” his administration left for Mr Trump upon leaving the White House.
