This once beautiful clean town of Pietermaritzburg with all it’s English and magnificent gardens and parks has deteriorated into a cesspool today.
The safest place in the world is now one of the most dangerous.
It was once called the last outpost of the British Empire.
I went to senior school there. I loved it…happiest days of my life.
Now, it breaks my heart.

Dingley's Bookshop
Rabbitt
In Pietermaritzburg the people
Go to school as the English do
And you'll see
The old English flag
At the top of the club
And the statue of the Queen still frowns at all who pass her by
And the Mrs. Tumbler with her nose in every pie
And the old pavilion where the men in white still play
At Dingley's
Dingley's bookshop (Dingley's bookshop)
With the books for scholars
To get degrees (Dingley's bookshop)
With all its old fashioned paint and shelves
And Dingley's old fashioned thoughts so he tells

And Kate his wife behind the shelves
And his son and daughter
Are happy to be part of Dingley's
