The issue is not as easy as it would appear superficially. The fact is that the DP is also in disarray - same as the RP - although it is not emphasized as much in the media.
The DP support of Sanders is based on a revolt against the Establishment of the Democratic Party and if Sanders drop out will his supporters vote for Clinton? I have my doubts about it. They are more likely to vote against another candidate with the same anti-establishment sentiments. Even if 30% of the Sanders supporters stay away from voting - Clinton will be in serious trouble.
If Trump is eliminated from the contest - the RP has another problem - the next potential candidate of the RP is Cruz - who is also hated by the establishment. That is probably why the RP themselves would not touch Trump at this stage - but the problem is with the complex system of American big business. If they think anybody threatens them - they would not hesitate to have him murdered.
However, let that be. I think that nobody saw the revolt of the ordinary Americans against a very close relationship between the Washington Party establishments of both parties and corporate America where the latter put in money and the former plays the tune which they prescribed. Cruz was the first person who spoke out against it and got himself involved in a battle with fellow RP members. Trump saw that as an opening and launched his candidacy.
Be it as it may - there are only a limited number of states where the DP got more votes than the RP in primary elections and those states are not enough to win the presidential elections. Even in Florida - who went DP in 2008 - the situation was as follows iro states won by Obama in the 2012 elections:-

Fact is the swing states in the past decade has been Florida and Ohio - the candidate who won in those two states normally win the Presidential election. Things in those two states does not favour the DP this time around as is evident by the above vote figures.
I am not sure that Clinton could win the US Presidential elections and regard her as weak a candidate as Trump is. She is disliked by the ordinary Americas who makes up the majority of the voters - bar the African Americans and even in states she won it was by courtesy of the African American support she gets. In the US the support base of the DP is limited. It normally is the Latinos and African Americans plus the blue-collar workers and the latter group is now seemingly going for the anti-establishment Sanders. three-letter government agencies are watching every Republican
political leader. They surveil everything. Thirdly, many Republicansare petrified of being called racists, so they are scared to evercriticize Obama or call out his crimes, let alone demand hisimpeachment. Fourth, why rock the boat? After defeat or retirement,
if you're a good old boy, you've got a $5 million-per-year lobbying
job waiting. The big-money interests have the system gamed. Win or lose,
they win.

get the short end of the stick. Good question! I'm certain Trump
will question what happened to the almost billion dollars given in a
rigged no-bid contract to college friends of Michelle Obama at
foreign companies to build the defective Obamacare website. By the way,

Trump will ask if Obamacare's architects can be charged with fraud
for selling it by lying. Trump will investigate Obama's widespread
IRS conspiracy, not to mention Obama's college records. Trump will
prosecute Clinton and Obama for fraud committed to cover up Benghazi
before the election. How about the fraud committed by employees of
the Labor Department when they made up dramatic job numbers in the
last jobs report before the 2012 election?
