Putin is eligible to be president until 2036. (Maybe longer if he changes the constitution again ).
The constitutional amendments of 2020 are a set of changes to the Constitution of Russia that were proposed by President Vladimir Putin and approved by a national vote....
(That Putin probably rigged or ensured any credible opposition was silenced).
The constitutional amendments include:
- Allowing Putin to run for two more six-year terms as president, potentially extending his rule until 2036.
- Strengthening the powers of the State Council, an advisory body that Putin chairs.
- Giving the president more authority over the appointment and dismissal of judges and prosecutors.
- Prohibiting high-ranking officials from holding foreign citizenship or residence permits.
- Enshrining the priority of the Russian Constitution over international law and treaties.
- Affirming Russia’s sovereignty over Crimea and Sevastopol, which were annexed from Ukraine in 2014.
- Recognizing marriage as a union between a man and a woman, and protecting the “historical truth” of the Great Patriotic War (World War II).
- Granting constitutional status to the Russian language, the Russian Orthodox Church, and the principles of social justice and patriotism1
These amendments have been criticized by some as a way for Putin to consolidate his power and undermine democracy, human rights, and the rule of law in Russia23
