mRNA vaccine, how may different are there?

Heart inflammation has occurred at a rate of 12.6 per million among those aged 12 to 39, according to the CDC’s Vaccine Safety Datalink. More than 138 million Americans have been fully vaccinated with the Pfizer or Moderna shots.

Recipients of the Pfizer vaccine account for more of the heart inflammation cases, but that’s largely a function of the FDA’s approval of the Pfizer shot for those age 12 and up. Moderna's vaccine has yet to be endorsed for those under age 18.

Over the last two months, the Pfizer vaccine has come under scrutiny in Israel and Europe for heart inflammation concerns.

Pfizer on Thursday said the heart inflammation is "an extremely rare side effect, and only an exceedingly small number of people will experience it after vaccination," citing the CDC data.

"Patients have typically rapidly improved with conservative treatment," Pfizer said in a statement. "It is important to note that CDC continues to strongly encourage COVID-19 vaccinations for eligible individuals aged 12 and older. With hundreds of millions of doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine administered globally, the benefit risk profile of our vaccine remains positive."

Moderna issued a similar statement, adding it "will work closely with FDA and with other regulatory authorities on any appropriate next steps."

So there is an 84% increase in heart inflammation cases and there are 12.6 cases per million. So instead of 7 cases of inflammation per million, there are now 12.6. Your chances of getting inflammation are 5.6 in a million more likely based on this disputed study.

Your incremental chances of dying from this inflammation are much lower….maybe one in a million?

If this stuff bothers you, it’s better to not get out of bed.

Meanwhile there is this from Forbes:

‘ A 35-year-old acquaintance drops dead from a hemorrhagic stroke. A friend in her 40s, and another in his 70s, experience recurrent spells of extreme dizziness, their hearts pounding in their chests when they stand. A 21-year-old student with no prior medical history is admitted to the ICU with heart failure, while a 48-year-old avid tennis player, previously healthy, suddenly suffers a heart attack. A relative is diagnosed with pericarditis, an inflammation of the protective sac surrounding the heart.

In a study that included patients from the initial wave of the pandemic, scientists from the University of Florida found that survivors of severe COVID-19 had two-and-a-half times the risk of dying in the year following illness compared to people who were never infected. Of note, nearly 80% of downstream deaths were not due to typical COVID complications like acute respiratory distress or cardiac causes.

So on balance are you better off with increased protection from Covid….probably.

This study illustrates how a lot of ethical drugs are sold….take this and you are 50% less likely to get this horrible disease. But your chances of getting the disease are 1 in 100000 and there are side effects. Statins are sold to marginally high cholesterol patients this way.

Even if one accept the numbers, the case for these drugs is marginal….but when you get to 1 case in 100,000 a different sample can produce a completely different result.
