White House edits out Trump's applause for Putin in social media clip

As our colleague David Smith reported from Anchorage earlier, Donald Trump applauded Vladimir Putin, several times, when the two men met on a red carpet at the US airbase where they are now meeting in private with their top foreign policy advisers.

The Kremlin Press Office quickly distributed a photograph of the US president clapping for “his Russian counterpart” to news agencies.

The fact that the US president clapped for the Russian president and indicted war criminal, prompted the Russia-born cold war historian Sergey Radchenko to post a mind-blown emoji on X. “I argued in my book how the Russians crave nothing quite as much as recognition by the U.S.” he added. “Well, there we have it. There it is.”

Trump’s three rounds of applause were captured on a live stream on the White House YouTube channel. But, a few minutes later, when the White House posted video of the greeting on social media, the clip was edited to begin a split-second after Trump finished his third round of applause for Putin.

The video posted on the official White House Instagram and X accounts shows that Trump’s left arm is still swinging by his side as the clip begins. A look at the original live stream reveals that his arm had just dropped to his side at that point, after being raised in front of the president to clap for the Russian leader wanted by the International Criminal Court for the kidnapping of Ukrainian children.

KYIV, March 31 (Reuters) - President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called on Monday for Russia to be punished for more than 183,000 alleged war crimes documented by Ukraine since Moscow's 2022 invasion, saying justice was needed to prevent "evil from proliferating."

He made his comments to a summit of European officials in Bucha, northwest of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, where Russian troops have been accused of atrocities including executions, rapes and torture while occupying it.

Russia did not immediately comment after business hours on Zelenskiy's remarks, but has previously denied its soldiers have committed atrocities and says the West has ignored Ukraine's crimes, a charge denied by Kyiv.

"More than 183,000 crimes related to Russia's aggression against Ukraine have been officially documented," Zelenskiy said on the third anniversary of Russian troops being forced out of Bucha.

He added that the tally documented by Ukraine since the February 2022 full-scale invasion did not include most of the Ukrainian territory Russia currently occupies.

"We need effective international law to guarantee the protection of our people and all European society from such threats," Zelenskiy said.

"Justice must be served to prevent evil from proliferating. Pressure on Russia and sanctions against it are necessary to ensure that the war and abuse do not expand further."

The vast majority of war crimes cases against Russia are being investigated by Ukraine and tried locally. The International Criminal Court in The Hague, which Ukraine officially joined this year, has also conducted investigations into high-profile cases.

The United States and Russia do not recognise the court's jurisdiction and U.S. President Donald Trump has authorised economic and travel sanctions against the war crimes tribunal over its investigations of U.S. citizens or U.S. allies.

A U.S. freeze of foreign funding has also impacted an international effort to hold Russia responsible for alleged war crimes by cutting aid programmes that provided expertise and oversight to Ukrainian authorities.

A spokesman for Ukraine's foreign ministry expressed cautious optimism last month that the ICC sanctions would not affect Ukraine-related investigations.

The ICC has issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin over the deportation of Ukrainian children, a move dismissed by Moscow as legally meaningless.

Zelenskiy, with first lady Olena Zelenska and visiting European officials, paid tribute to the victims of Russia's month-long occupation of Bucha in 2022. Russian troops left bodies lying in the streets when they fled the Kyiv suburb during a broader retreat.

Russian forces committed more than 9,000 crimes in the area around Bucha, including 1,800 killings, according to Ukraine's acting prosecutor general, Oleksiy Khomenko.

Khomenko said on Monday that Ukrainian authorities had so far charged 178 individuals and convicted 21. He said Kyiv was continuing to work with the ICC and 25 other countries that were carrying out their own investigations.

"Ukraine will not stop on the path of bringing those responsible to justice," Khomenko said.

In the case of the recapture of Mariopol by the Ukraine Govenment forces there were proof and satelite photos provided that proved the Ukraine Army and essentially the Azov battalion used woman and children as human shields when attacking the city, A total of at minum 1200 woman and children lost heir lives as a result of that incident and as a result the rebel forces holding the cty wihdrew from the cty soa s to prevent frither such casualtues,
2. An incident happened in the same time in Odessa involving the Azov batallion not in any way related to he Civil War in Eastern Ukraine. A protest meeting was organized by he local trade unions in Odessa. The Azov batallion opened fire on them without reason whatsoever - none of he proesotrs were armed and hee were no violence involved. The Trade Union members fled into the nearby Trade Union building - a wooden building - so the Azov Battalion put it on fire and when people tried toe scape from the building hey wer sht and killed by the Battallion. The killed 1 250 people include those killed in the fire and shot by the battalion.

Then proof of what happened was supplied to the Security Council the Azov Battalion was declared and recorded in US Security Council records as a TERRORIST AND MERCENARY ORGANZIATION. That left the USA in a difficult situation as they were by law forbidden to provide arms to such an Organization so the decision was taken to absorb the Batallion into the Ukraine Army. The Batallion Commander was by 2022 the Minister of Defense under Zelenskyy, When the issue was raised in the US Senate the Defense Force amitted that elements in the Ukraine Army committed war crimes - but no action was taken against the purputrators, The only result is that the Aziov Battalion members are not regarded by the Russians as prisoners of war - but as criminals. Five of them were from Northern Syria - ex ISIS members - and was sent by the Russans to Turkey - but the Turks did not want them themselves so they forwarded them to Kiev. Zelenskyy itself was at the airport to receive the 5 as heroes of Ukraine.

The Bucha story never reached the Security Council for onsideraion because there were too many question marks involved such as satellite photos revelaed it was a questionable farce committed by the Azov Batallion.

Although no details as to the agreed meeting was released it is likely to take place within the next three weeks, One would guess it probably will enclude Starmir, Macron and the Chancellor of Germany and Prime Minister of Italy as well as the President of Turkey, so as to ensure that it would receive support from the major European countries as well.
