Taliban’s Abdul Ghani Baradar is undisputed victor of a 20-year war
Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban leader freed from a Pakistani jail on the request of the US less than three years ago, has emerged as the undisputed military victor of a 20-year war.

Baradar’s return to power embodies Afghanistan’s inability to escape the bloody shackles of its past. The story of his adult life is the story of the country’s unceasing, pitiless conflict.

Born in Uruzgan province in 1968, he fought in the Afghan mujahideen against the Soviets in the 1980s. After the Russians were driven out in 1992 and the country fell into civil war between rival warlords, Baradar set up a madrassa in Kandahar with his former commander and reputed brother in law, Mohammad Omar. Together, the two mullahs founded the Taliban, a movement spearheaded by young Islamic scholars dedicated to the religious purification of the country and the creation of an emirate.

Fuelled by religious fervour, widespread hatred of the warlords and substantial support from Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency, the Taliban swept to power in 1996 after a series of stunning conquests of provincial capitals taking the world by surprise, just as the movement has done in recent weeks. Baradar, Mullah Omar’s deputy who was widely believed to be a highly effective strategist, was a key architect of those victories.Baradar played a succession of military and administrative roles in the five-year Taliban regime, and by the time it was ousted by the US and its Afghan allies, he was deputy minister of defence.
During the Taliban’s 20-year exile, Baradar had the reputation of being a potent military leader and a subtle political operator. Western diplomats came to view him as on the wing of the Quetta Shura – the Taliban’s regrouped leadership in exile – that was most resistant to ISI control, and most amenable to political contacts with Kabul.
The Obama administration, however, was more fearful of his military expertise than it was hopeful about his supposedly moderate leanings. The CIA tracked him down to Karachi in 2010 and in February of that year persuaded ISI to arrest him
“The capture of Baradar was predominantly instigated because of his role in the war rather than because of the likelihood that he was going to suddenly make peace,” a former official said. “The fact is, the Pakistanis held on to him all those years in large part because the United States asked them to.”

In 2018, however, Washington’s attitude changed and Donald Trump’s Afghan envoy, Zalmay Khalilzad, asked the Pakistanis to release Baradar so he could lead negotiations in Qatar, based on the belief that he would settle for a power-sharing arrangement. “I had never seen any real substantiation of that point, but it just took on a kind of mythic idea,” the former official said.

Baradar signed the Doha agreement with the US in February 2020, in what the Trump administration hailed as a breakthrough towards peace but which now appears a mere staging post towards total Taliban victory.

The US and Taliban agreement not to fight each other was supposed to be followed by power-sharing talks between the Taliban and the Kabul government of Ashraf Ghani. Those talks stumbled along with little progress, and it is clear now that Baradar and the Taliban were playing for time, waiting for the Americans to leave and preparing a final offensive. Baradar’s life has taught him patience and confidence in ultimate victory.

......and the point is you hold President Trump responsible for the balls up that is in play now?

The Arabs have been at war with each other for a thousand years and will still be at it in a thousand years.

Fanatics, brutal animals with no respect for life just for starters.

Who is this "President Trump" you speak of, fArt? Surely you mean ex-president Bozo, the twice-impeached one-term failure?

I know you were very fond of chanting "4 more years" before you got copious amounts of egg all over your stupid face, but please note he's not the president anymore (thank goodness), he lost to the doddering old fool Krusty the Clown! How embarrassing is that?

LMAO!

PS And yes, this is all Bozo's deal. Krusty is just following through on the disastrous deal that Bozo brokered . . . without consulting any other world powers! What an incompetent buffoon! Almost as big a stuff-up as his handling of Trumpvirus!

The above are totally false and misleading.   There is no proof whatsoever that Trump or his  administration had any hand in approving who should be freed in terms of the armistice agreement between the Afghan Government and the Taliban.     The Afghan Government in fact insisted that they will decide who should be freed and who not.

I did not realize that there were only 3 500 US soldiers left in Afghanistan in January 2021  and the Taliban did not launch a single attack while that situation prevailed, because Trump told them that if they break the agreements they would be severely punished.   The armistice and  withdrawal process as to withdrawal of foreign troops were known to all countries still with interests in Afghanistan.   The German withdrawal was orderly and well-planned.    Germans in the area they were stationed in  and the Afghans working with them - as well as the weaponry was shipped out of Afghanistan before the troops finally left.

In the case of the Americans chaos reigned supreme.   The evacuation of the most important base of the US Army in Kabul took place in the middle of the night and the Afghans only found the Americans left the next  morning  they were gone and the prison on site was opened and the prisoners gone.   All the arms and weaponry to the value of an estimated  $83 billion was left behind.

The Taliban attacked the moment they found out that Biden is a total spineless  idiot and  that he would do nothing of they attack.    the result was the takeover in Afghanistan.

If the us had any say in the matter of the Baradar release  as claimed he would have been in the Bagram Base camp prison and not in an Afghan prison.    That is why this story is amde up to link Trump to the disaster caused by Biden.

When the  Biden Administration found out they left circa 15 000  to  20 000 US citizens in Afghanistan behind - Biden send back 6000  troops to the Kabul airport and arranged with the Taliban that the US citizens should be allowed to go to the  airport from where they would be repatriated,   The fact is that the Taliban did not even think it necessary to inform the road blocks all over Kabul that the Americans  should be allowed to go through and despite waving their US passports  - they were often beaten up and turned back.

In the meantime there are also German and UK citizens left in Kabul and each of the two countries send  small specialist army groups to Kabul airport - from where their staff goes into Kabul to locate their citizens and take them safely to the airport.    The Americans are not needing anybody to collect US citizens or refugees given entry permission to the US in the city and the people involved were left to the mercy of the Taliban/

So what is the case now - it is obvious that the present US  Administration cannot be expected to honor any commitments made by them  and the Taiwanese are already under threat by China - who told them that the Americans will do nothing  when they are under attack.   The attack will take place within weeks rather than months.

After Taiwan  South Korea and Australia would be targets for attacks  by the Chinese  and in the case of Australia they should rather sought new  allies  with India and  even Russia - the USA under Biden would abandon them without  batting an eyelid.   By the way China is apparently in cahoots with the Taliban and Pakistan - so war in the subcontinent is also inevitable.      I think  we are living in uncertain and dangerous times all caused by having a dud President in the USA,         .

Well we will find out what happened in the Arizona audit on Friday and whether it was really necessary  or not.    In any event that story is also BS from some fool journalist.  Any money collected went to the Republican Party and not Trump personally anyway.     Donations of $230 million went to the Party and it is not clear how the Party spent that money.   In fact  the funding of the Audits came from private  citizens who believe their   country is being destroyed by Biden and that money went to the Arizona Senate anyway.    .      .

No amount of trying to blame Trump is going exonerate Joe. Obama allowed Isis to dominate much of Iraq, Biden allowed the Taliban to roll up Afghanistan.

Trump by contrast fixed Isis and would have ultimately sorted this latest Taliban grab as well.

The facts are beyond dispute.

Hell I just read today that Bin Laden put Biden off limits, because he figured Biden would be a weak president. The ultimate insult.
