The African Presidents have one problem - how to protect the money they have looted and to keep out of jail if they do not die in office.
The system in Zimbabwe was for Mugabe to force his wife onto Zimbabweans allowing him to die in office. His wife is at present actually the real president with his wife making decisions which the feeble-minded Mugabe endorses. His sons are still too young to succeed him and his nephew (at present in refugeed in SA) is even a bigger crook than his uncle was. In any event his stupid wife with no popular support would be foisted onto the people of Zimbabwe..
In the case of Zumma - the situation is roughly the same - but it is not foreseen that he would die in office. So Zuma is trying to install his ex-wife as ANC leader with the same objectives. Keep the patronage system going - keep the crooks in power to keep on stealing and looting - while protecting him from being exposed as the criminal he is and for him to go to jail. The objective remains the same = protect the stolen billions and keep it in the family.
The signs are that Mugabe would be kicked out in Zimbabwe - but what is going to happen in SA? Heaven help SA if that sour bitch (his ex-wife) with the support of the major looters succeed Zuma as ANC leader. I think the fall of Mugabe may bring to the fore the dynastic ambitions as a problem for the Zuma camp in reaching their desired objectives.
I do think the ANC December Congress will be challenged in court - irrespective of whether the crooks (the Zuma camp) win or not. That will leave the ANC in limbo and I think the opposition actually hope that Dlamioni-Zuma win the ANC leadership election - that would contributed in a major way to the ANC losing power in 2019. However, the damage caused by Zuma and co by then would be massive.
