Early in Trumps presidency he announced that his policy entails trade agreements with al countrie the US trades with,

A number of EU countries submitted comprehensive propsals for such deals and Bessent was very happy that such proposalds could be cnverted into agreements that benefot both countries concernedm The proposals ubmitted was of high quality, The individual EU members concerned pointed out that trade agreements between EU countries must be dealt with by the EU. aware of the proces involved Bessent asked he EU to sbmit their own proposals as to a potential trade agreement

So what did the EU submit as a basis for negotiations? what the USA govenment was best descried as bureaucratic garbage, Clearly the little chaps in suits in Brussels did not want a trade agreement with the USA, Sp what happened next was to be expected - 50% tariffs on all trade wth EU Countries effective 1 June 2924,

Realizin g that the EU made a total face of the process a panic call to Trump was inevitable, The promise were made that the EU in sonsultation with its member states will submit by the firsst week in July a comprhensive and not bureaucratic BS will be made available as a basis for negotiation qould e ubmitted to the USA by te first week in July and until then the tariiffs will be suspended,

Maybe the liltle men in suits in Brussels have leaned a bitter lessson - the are not as important as they thought they were, , .

Anyone who signs up to the EU knows that it trades as a block. It is much better to trade as a block to leverage the EU's collective purchasing power.

The UK having left the EU has seen no benefits of being able to negotiate its own contracts. No new trade deals for years, until Starmer got in. The UK alone is too weak and accepted the garbage that Trump imposed. However this not a legally binding contract, and either party can cancel at anytime

America want to negotiate with individual countries who are smaller than the US, but they struggle with the EU. I would rather go for self sufficiency that the garbage that Trump dishes out.

So this is Trump caving

President Donald Trump said Sunday that he agreed to an extension on the 50% tariff deadline on the European Union until July 9.

“I received a call today from Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, requesting an extension on the June 1st deadline on the 50% Tariff with respect to Trade and the European Union,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“I agreed to the extension — July 9, 2025 — It was my privilege to do so,” he added.

Trump’s post came after Von der Leyen said that she had a “good call” with Trump, but needed until July 9 to “reach a good deal.”

“The EU and US share the world’s most consequential and close trade relationship,” she wrote on X.

“Europe is ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively,” she continued.

It ws not neccesary for the EU to supply shit to the USA as a basis for negotiation of a trade treaty, That is the long and the short of the whole saga, In the main the EU wanted the U SA to submit itself to the Global Warming ideology and oter lofty leftist ideals - which they had no right to do/

In the meantime the EU policies are making it difficult for member countries to trade with the USA, Many countries in Europe wants trade agreement with the USA and it was those countries who wanted a deal with the USA and sent proposals to the USA withs suggestions as to rade - but the EU in Brussels sent shot to the USA as a basis for a trade deal. The problem is that the EU develop a bureaucracy that was a law unto themselves and undermine development in EU countries. In moost EU countries the Brussels establishment reihgn supreme - or so they thought - that is why the EU became unpopular in many EU countries and the growth of parties opposed to the EU is strengthening by the day,

That is why the EU is self-destructing - it became the lawmakers in Europe which they compile in the form of laws and regulations sent to member countries to implement. It led to Brexit. Nobody in Europe wants a bureaucratic dictatorship in Brussels and that is what is causing more and more opposition to the bureaucratic regime in Brussells like for instance the Open Border policy.

Most countries in Europe suffe from economic weakening for years now and they wants trade deals with the USA as the way out of declining economies - but the Brussells bureaucrats think otherwise, They think that they rule the roost and can do as they please.

That is why the Preident of the EU council pjhoned Trump and asked for time to come up with a response on a professional and not idealogical basis,

Yeah its a cave. Trump threatens 50% tariffs on EU imports from June 1st as opposed to the original deadline of July 9th. His administration imply it's because they have not been happy with the EU's trade proposal's so far and they want to light a fire under them.

The EU respond's that it want's respect and won't negotiate while under threat. Trump and the EU commissioner have a phone call. Trump goes back to his original deadline without getting anything in return.

So yes its a another cave from the Donald.

If only Washington had some people of the quality of the little men in suits from Brussels, they would be far better off. But I guess your stuck with art of the fold.

Total garbage by DumbMike.

The EU wants to improve self-sufficiency, but they realise the short-term loss impact of the tariffs, especially on France and Germany's car sales.

Many European countries just want to match the tariffs the same way China did.

The EU wants self-sufficiency and is thinking about replacing Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal with European alternatives. American Social media websites may also get banned as they are not regulating content properly.

You seemed to be going bonkers - the 50% tariff as announced was to take effect om 1 June 2025 and after a phone call from the President of the EU begging for forgiveness and suggested that new proposals be submitted and that negotiations will start befire 9 July 2025. If not the tariffs will automatically start on that day,

Moz wishes he was one of those little men in suits, sipping coffee and eating superior chocolate in sophisticated and elegant Brussels cafes. Cool, calm, collected, diligent and professional and not ruled by emotion, unlike their colleagues across the Atlantic. Of fairness it easier for the pro's in Brussels though as they don't have to deal with Elon Musk's kid running round their office's rubbing snot into the furniture.
