....said the gloating CNN anchor after the Donald claimed we might have one by year end. ‘I’m not confident in these vaccines’ said Como. This from ABC news represents the standard Media response:
I think we’re going to have a vaccine by the end of the year,” he told reporters later in the day.
But experts say that the development, testing and production of a vaccine for the public is still at least 12 to 18 months off, and that anything less would be a medical miracle.
“I think it’s possible you could see a vaccine in people’s arms next year — by the middle or end of next year. But this is unprecedented, so it’s hard to predict,” said Dr. Paul Offit, a professor at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
.........
So much for Offit. As in most arguments with the media, Trump was right. But only because he lit a fire under the slow moving medical establishment to get this done. He created the competitive environment that had the best companies trying to outdo each other and got the funding in place to build huge vaccine stocks even before they were proven, taking the personal risk of being wrong.
And of course we have found, most recently in Germany, that even the most disciplined approach to the virus eventually succumbs. There is no effective defense against this new virus, except herd immunity and vaccines
Trump’s business man’s approach dramatically changed the time to get a vaccine....it is a miracle. Trump probably saved millions of lives worldwide.
