Here is an article on the appointment:-

"President Donald Trump has nominated handbag designer Lana Marks to be the next US ambassador to South Africa.

Marks, a Florida resident and member of Trump's exclusive Mar-a-Lago resort, according to a source familiar with the club, was born and raised in South Africa, where she attended the University of the Witwatersrand and the Institute of Personnel Management in Johannesburg, the White House said in a statement.

Marks is photographed and quoted giving a warm testimonial on the website of Mar-a-Lago's official photographer, saying she had captured her daughter's wedding at the club "in a very special way."

Marks is known for luxury handbags in exotic animal skins, such as ostrich and alligator, with prices that can hover above $19,000. One of her more expensive creations, a $400,000 clutch, has been carried on the red carpet. The designer's website features photos of celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston carrying her goods and says her accessories have become a favorite among "royalty and entertainment style makers."

Described by the Palm Beach Daily as "like Trump, a relentless self-promoter," Marks speaks Afrikaans and Xhosa, two of South Africa's languages, according to the White House.

Her website chronicles an upbringing that included studying at the Royal Academy of Ballet. The concept for starting an exotic leather handbag line came, the site says, when Marks couldn't find a bag to match the suit she planned to wear to a birthday celebration for Queen Elizabeth. According to her Instagram account she attempted to qualify for the French Open tennis tournament in 1978.

Marks' site also notes that she was appointed to the Women's Leadership Board at Harvard University's Kennedy School of government, which supports the Women and Public Policy Program. Both the board and the program focus on gender equality and improving lives around the world, the Harvard site says. The Harvard site notes that board members "engage philanthropically" with the policy program "through three annual giving tiers."

Board members provide a minimum annual gift of $10,000 per individual member, $20,000 per Leadership Circle member and $25,000 per corporation."

At least she would have some idea what is happening in SA and it may be a good appointment with special reference to woman rights and the promotion of small business developments - especially by women in SA.

Relationship between the US and SA is not necessarily all that rosy and President Ramaphosa can cause a more frosty relationship if he refuses to accept Marks's appointment.

So she's a member of Bozo's snotty and ostentatious Mar-a-Lago club?
You'd think that on its own would disqualify her but it's quite easy to see how this would have happened . . .
Bozo: We need a new ambassador for where? South Africa? Where the hell is South Africa?
Advisor: Ummmm . . . it's in the south of . . . errrmmm . . . Africa, sir.
Bozo: Africa is a shithole.
Advisor: Yes sir, but we need ambassadors in shithole countries as well.
Bozo: Do I know any South Africans?
Advisor: Well, sir, there's actually a South African member of Mar-a-Lago called . . .
Bozo: What? A black member of Mar-a-Lago? How the hell . . .
Advisor: . . . she's white sir.
Bozo: Africa has white people?
Advisor: Yes sir, she's a white woman born in South Africa and now she lives here and she's a member of your club.
Bozo: Is she hot? Does she put out?
Advisor: She's . . . ummmm . . . 64 sir. Her name is Lana Marks.
Bozo: Damn! So what does this horse-faced old broad do?
Advisor: She's a handbag designer, sir.
Bozo: Handbags? Ivanka is into handbags. She'd better not compete with Ivanka. Ivanka is really hot, don't you think? Man I'd love to . . . mmmmm . . . but the press, they'd make a big deal out of it . . . but still, she's tremendously hot! Believe me!
Advisor: Uhhh . . . yes sir.
Bozo: Well, check it out with Ivanaka. If Ivanka says it's okay then it's a good idea. Would be good to have a white Mar-a-Lago member as the ambassador in a shithole country . Mmmmmm . . . now you've got me thinking about Ivanka . . . man is she hot or what?
Advisor: Ummmm . . . yes sir . . .
Hope Ramaphosa gives them a suitable reply . . . along the lines of "Get serious!"

Hmmmm . . . just found this article talking about Ivanka Trump's fashion brand which is called "Ivanka Trump Marks".
I wonder if that's "Marks" as in "trademarks" or Ivanka's good buddy in the handbag business, Lana Marks?

Rooinek

Do you know anything about Marks and why is her SA background a detrimental factor?

I know you have strong anti-Trump sentiments - but is it necessary to stay to facts.  That mythical discussion is a stretch of imagination that sounds funny - but do you really know whether Trump does not know where SA is and that he is unaware of the fact that SA has a White component of its citizenry?

So why should Ramaphosa say "get serious" - he needs working together with the USA and cannot afford to antagonize the present US Government.   In any event that the faction ridden Democratic Party woul have a different policy pleasing more people outside of the USA you must study USA politics carefully.   A lot of new House members assured their voters they would support elements of the Trump policies in the House and Senate - otherwise they were toast.   They are not going to change that attitude before the 2020 elections.

I never posted the article to cause another anti-Trump tantrum, but rather from a local interest point of view.   Certainly a Xhoza and Afrikaans speaker would find it easier to communicate with two important local communities and a person attached to a Harvard institution  could give valuable advice and assistance as to small business development which is a key to economic recovery in SA.

Ag ou Maaik, what does this glorified handbag merchant know about politics? She's only in the discussion because she's Bozo and Ivanka's buddy at the club.
There must be literally thousands of better qualified people to do the job who speak both Xhosa and English.
As for Bozo's geography, check out this link where Mr Big Brain didn't even know there were countries called Nepal and Bhutan and he thought Haiti and El Salvador were in Africa.
LMAO!

Those are little countries where few people know they even exist.

I gained the impression that Ambassador appointment other than  to key countries like for instance the UK, Russia and China and other major counties require confirmation by the Senate - while in the main other such officials in smaller countries  are there more for PRO and communication purposes and not any real diplomatic functions.  The Embassies are  staffed with experts on lower levels.

However, no I do not know what the norms for appointment of Ambassadors are - but I once went out a couple of times with the daughter of one.  He was an oilman from Texas and a friend of Johnson.

I stayed with friends on a farm outside of Pretoria for years.  The wife of my friend was a South African  working  for many years in the US embassy,   We had up to 50 mostly embassy staff members on the farm every Sunday for lunch.   Some were very senior Embassy officials and they were real professionals - one of them was Asa Evans from a famous Alabama family. So I at one stage had contacts with a wide variety of  US embassy staff and from my perspective that was a very real situation.

Ou Maaik, none of that explains what possible value a handbag designer could add to diplomatic relations between South Africa and the USA . . . other than to give Bozo and Ivanka's club buddy a cushy job.
As for Nepal, Bhutan, Haiti and El Salvador being little countries and "few people know they even exist", I don't know what kind of circles you hang around in, but I can't think of a single family member, friend or work colleague who wouldn't know about the existence of all 4 those countries.

Some reports - like this one - are saying it's official, Lana Marks is the new US Ambassador to South Africa.
That article also points out that she has zero diplomatic experience, she has a "string of lawsuits trailing behind her" and she is the 4th member of Bozo's Mar-a-Lago club to be offered a diplomatic post.
Sounds like a good club to join if you have lots of money, no taste and are looking for a cushy job.

They may know the countries exist - but where those are located would be way beyond their knowledge.  Nepal perhaps - but the rest most all people have problems with,

No - Rooinek - ambassadors to countries like SA are PRO's nothing more.   Any real issues are dealt with by senior embassy staff.

Name me how many other Ambassadors from the USA in SA was professional diplomats.  From experience those posts are routinely filled by friends and business partners of the President.   Trump is by far not the first President making that kind of appointment.

Well ou Maaik, if they know of the existence of countries like Nepal and Bhutan then they're already well ahead of Bozo.
If you read the article I linked, he was asking questions like "There are countries called "Nipple" and "Button"?" and pointing at a map of Asia asking "What is this stuff between those countries?"
And this isn't some work colleague or a dumb cousin or anything, this is the President of the USA . . . the same guy who is always telling people how smart he is and what a big brain he has.

I did now see that article referring to the appointment of Ms Marks = but I wonder -

*   what the article have to do with Ms Marks's appointment; and

*   whether Trump taking his daughter with him on foreign trips can be regarded as a mortal sin; and

*   whether the registration of patents for which Trump's daughter has applied long before the trip - is really anything but propaganda.  There is nowhere in the world where applications for  registration of patents is a criminal offence.

Draad, assuming your broken English means that I'm a coward in other ways, go ahead and name them.
I know in your case that's a tough task because you tend to deal in cryptic innuendo and vague hints but try to be be a straight talker for once and articulate what you're trying to say.
I've been very specific about particular questions that I've asked both Moffie and Dense multiple times and they've been too cowardly to answr. Try to do the same.

Of course, what the doddering old braggart doesn't mention is the fact that whatever pics I've ever put up have been with the express permission of the person whose picture it was. He doesn't mention that little detail because he's not just a craven coward, he's also a deceitful and manipulative liar.
It's not cowardice to not want your personal details splashed all over an internet forum. Unlike Moffie, I didn't start off posting on a rugby forum to tell everyone how wonderful I was, how much I earned, what degrees I got from what fancy schools, what boards I sat on, what overpriced 30 year old whisky I was getting drunk on and I didn't put up pics of my house or my car . . . I started posting on rugby boards to talk about rugby.
I'm not for one minute saying Moffie hasn't got the right to drone on and on about all his supposed achievements in life but if you're  going to shove all that personal information down other people's throats with all your bragging and boasting, don't be surprised when they use that information to Google the truth about you and find out you've actually been a bit of a flop in life, you're not much more than a glorified Vegemite salesman, you're not liked by your own family and you look like a pathetic little stick insect.
I choose not to brag and boast about my life on an internet message board. I don't think that's cowardly, I actually think it's a lot smarter than putting it all out there and then snivelling like a whiny little bitch when someone does a bit of fact checking.
PS: Here is the thread where Moffie put up a pic of ou Maaik without his permission and further down the thread I put up a pic of Moffie with his express permission . . . "yes, go ahead".
PPS: And here is the thread where Dense asked me to put up his photo and I endangered you all by doing it . . . "By the way, how about posting my photo . . .

Yes we have been through all that many times before and we know you invaded my privacy, my kids' privacy and we know after mistakenly posting a picture of denny's dead brother, you never had the decency to apologize. The only reason you are on the site Urinal is to humiliate other posters. There's no shared humour in those attempted beat downs....just dripping vitriol. And there is minimal interest in posting on rugby....you live mostly in Beeno's world. You are the typical bully of English literature. The kind of guy who as a kid would have torn the wings off flies or tied a can to a dog's tail. It wont help old chap, the demons in your entrails aren't going away just because you can intimidate some poster on this Board.

As for all my so-called negativity on the Trumpet, well, if you want to pretend that pointing out Bozo's blunders is negative rather than realistic then that's your problem, not mine.
