I have not watched this movie yet, so it certainly is something that I want to do soon

For those of you that have not seen this movie scene, I came across it accidently, but man, this is some acting from Jeff Daniels......

They are sitting in a large auditorium and he is asked a question by a student, which is " Can you say why America is the greatest country in the world"

His response is just so powerful, and in a lot of ways very true.

This post is not a diss to the USA.... not at all, I still want to visit this country because I believe they do so much around the world that is good, decent, and morally sound.... but as with all countries, it has it's faults, along with disloyal, unlawful, and criminal citizens and politicians.......which country doesn't

Here is the scene, it is only 5 minutes long, and the actual question happens at the 1:05 mark ....

Just simply brilliant... and one of the best cinema monologues I think I have seen....

Great clip I have watched this many times, I think it sums up the general view the rest of the world holds on America and the people of America'

I know there are Americans that can see the many faults their society has (no society is perfect even the best country in the world (NZ) has plenty of problems but from an outsider America appear to have a large portion of those that are blinded by the flag waiving BS and constant patriotism that overwhelms their country from every aspect of their media.

Moz since you live there, is it as bad as it appears from an outsider?

It's been over 10 years since I was in the states and then I have only seen a fraction of the country.

One of my best mates is an American (living in China for the last 10 years)  though he loves America he is very critical of the average Amercans ignorance and blinded views on the world as a whole so I may be influenced somewhat by his views.

The USA was a world leader when people show responsibility and even President Truman said there is no opportunity that politicians can get wealthy on the basis of the salaries paid to them.

The situation deteriorated badly during the Vietnam War - when corruption became part of a major problem.    It went on under Rixon, Ford and Carter.    But some sanity came back to the USA when Reagan became President.    The situation become a major problem durng the presidencies of the two Bush's, Clinton and Obama when corrupt politicians took over and became only interested in their own enrichment through a kick-back system.   Obama was particularly crafty - he did what Zuma did in SA a- by capturing the FBI and Justice Department to protect the corrupt politicians of especially the Democrats and also some Republicans involved as well.

The problem is that the politicians do not care a hoot about the people.    A city like Chicago has become known as the murder capital of the America's.   The inner cities are all dangerous and thousands of people are fleeing from California and New York to other states at a rate of 24 000 per month,     The border is open and near to 6 million people entered the USA illegally, smuggling in hard drugs and making crime getting worse.   Near to 150 000 people died from drug abuse last year in the USA.

A Woke culture has taken over and is undermining democracy in the country.   The children are indoctrinated to hate their parents and the history of the USA.   Moral decay is sweeping through the USA cities and people are encouraged to destroy historic sites and to riot when they are paid to do so.   Moral decay has resulted in fall of empires in the past - the turn of the  USA to fall from the no 1 democracy in the world to a country of zero importance insofar as Democracy is concerned is nearer than people think.

The fact is that the USA is collapsing fast and I hope you learn to speak Chinese - because that will ha ppen sooner rather than later,

Yeah seen that scene years ago but never watched the show itself.

I think at least from a Irish/European perspective we find the idea of a people saying they are the greatest country on the planet at bit distasteful especially when its coming from what can be quite a inward looking country that is often a bit ignorant of anything that's happening outside of its borders.

We also don't quite understand why they bang on so much about freedom or patriotism.

When Will Smith first landed in South Africa to promote his movie "Ali", he was once asked in an interview how his experience was in Africa.

He said he basically broke down in tears when he first walked off the plane onto the tarmac, because someone said "Welcome home brother"

He then proceeded to say that American people in general were too ignorant about anything outside of the USA, and that far more emphasis should be put on the younger generation in America, to learn more about what is actually happening outside of the US borders......

I think the USA is a fantastic country, with many great and admirable qualities, and it is definitely on my list of countries to visit in the near future.
