The Trump administration turned down more vaccine doses 'as recently as November,' former FDA commissioner says

• The Trump administration once again rejected an offer from Pfizer for more COVID-19 vaccines "as recently as November," according to former Food and Drug Administration commissioner Scott Gottlieb.
• "There were multiple conversations with the U.S. government about taking more supply in the second quarter," Gottlieb, who is a Pfizer board member, told CNBC on Monday.
• This comes on the heels of the Trump administration reportedly rejecting 100 million doses of Pfizer's recently approved COVID-19 vaccine over the summer, according to The New York Times.

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, Trump's former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, told CNBC on Monday that the Trump administration declined an offer from Pfizer for more doses of its COVID-19 vaccine "as recently as November."

"There were multiple conversations with the U.S. government about taking more supply in the second quarter," said Gottlieb, who is a Pfizer board member. "The company wasn't taken up on the offer as recently as November."

This news follows a New York Times report earlier this week that the White House in the summer rejected 100 million coronavirus vaccine doses developed by the pharmaceutical giant and BioNTech.

The broader implications, according to Gottlieb, are that other countries will swoop in to claim the doses rejected by the US.

"In the interim, other countries have put in orders for those supplies," he said. "I think they're going to work this out. I think hopefully we'll find a way to increase supply and be able to get the government what the government needs."

Gottlieb also noted how dealing with the US government on the vaccine has been "challenging," even given Pfizer's status as an American company.

"This is an American company, we want to work with the US government," he said. "But this has been a challenging process because there have been multiple conversations happening as recently as November, and now they're coming back and wanting to restart those conversations when other commitments have been made in the interim."

Hahahaha.....so the ‘big news’ finally got to Australia. This was fully exposed in the media  7 days ago. But of course Gottlieb sang a different tune 5 days before that:

‘There’s going to be an inflection point where I think there’s going to be sufficient supply in the market that we’re going to see this rationing system start to erode and it’s going to be more widely available to larger groups of people,” Gottlieb said. “My guess is that’s going to be in the March timeframe.”

The vaccines due to be released from Pfizer and Moderna appear to be more than 90% effective in preventing coronavirus, but only after patients receive two doses at least 20 days apart. Smith raised concern about Americans taking two doses of the vaccine. Gottlieb said that while there is some protection after the first dose, both doses should be taken for 95% efficacy. Becker echoed Gottlieb’s sentiments and highlighted the importance of getting both doses to be fully protected.’

Hilarious huh, but then you probably never realized Gottlieb is on the Pfizer Board which explains some of their anti Trump stance.

The fact is the administration is diversifying their commitments. Which is very smart given the  Oxford blooper. In January we will likely have a one dose, very safe J&J vaccine in vast quantities....they have been building stocks under Warp Speed. Making additional Pfizer vaccines that have to be stored at 83 degrees below zero and taken  twice, a less desirable alternative.

The basis for the claim is a comment President Donald Trump made at a rally in South Carolina on Feb. 28, when he was complaining about Democrats’ attacks on him and his administration.

Here’s what Trump said:

And this is their new hoax."

Our reading of these comments is that Trump is saying Democratic criticism of him is a hoax, not that the coronavirus doesn’t exist or wasn’t real. We’ve been unable to find other comments of Trump suggesting that. 

When asked about his comments the next day, Trump specifically said he was talking about Democrats’ reaction: "Hoax, referring to the action that they take to try and pin this on somebody, because we’ve done such a good job," Trump said. 

Other fact-checkers have agreed with our reading of Trump’s comments.

Politifact are not anti Trump, its a case that Trump is anti facts.

Clinton received just “False”/“Mostly False” for 26 percent of her statements (Investors Business Daily, June 30, 2016)." AllSides has not independently examined Politifact's Truth-O-Meter labels.

That site....strongly biased left,  cleared Trump of  the bleach lie and the calling the virus a hoax lie.

In a more sensible world. like 20 years ago, people wouldn’t need a site to tell them what is readily apparent if you just read the words.
