Joy Barendse was married to Charlie Barendse, the top SA jockey in the 1950's and 1960's  I know the family very well since the 1975 and they were also close frieds of my parents.

Charley and Joy had a daughter Kerry and she married Arbury Roberts - a well-known racing trainer for a long time in the 1970's and 1980's.  Kerry had two daughters one of which married Jeff Lloyd and the other Glenn Schofield - he rtwo most prominent jockey's before they moved to Australia in 2007.  Jeff and Glenn making hay in Australia as well.

There cannot be a family closer linked to horse racing ever in SA over a three generation situation.

I phoned Joy this morning to wish her well on her wonderful 100 years and that brought back memories of the many times we went to the races together and sat in the owners and trainers restaurants eating wonderful meals served there and also in the members facilities where some of the most prominent personalities were Harry Oppenheimer and Gary Player.

May she be blessed as a remembrance of the great p erson she actually is.
