I read an article that suggests that the war is "mostly" about gas and oil.
Almost 50% of Russia's GDP is from gas and oil.
It was recently discovered that Ukraine has untapped gas and oil resources that could match Russia, despite being a much smaller place.
Some of the areas annexed by Russia used to be part of Ukraine, again rich in gas and oil.
So, if Ukraine joined the EU, they would work with the West to develop the energy technology, which would compete against Russia's energy supply.
Russia has smart people, but they are a backward economy that is dependent on selling natural resources. If Putin is so smart, why is his country not realising its potential.
