Not good news for older people. The risk of hospitalizations is only halved for those who are vaccinated, if they are over 80….cut in a third for those in their seventies….in a quarter for those in their sixties.

This is from a massive UK data base, so undoubtedly reliable. The age skew is enormous ….more than 10 times as likely to be hospitalized if you are over 80 than in your 20s. So one might make the argument that the unvaccinated 30 year old is safer than the vaccinated 80 year old. But the vaccinated 30 year old is  10 times safer than the unvaccinated 30 year old.

These results are based on all hospital admissions in the UK for the month of September and normalized for incidence per 100000 people. . If you are at low risk, your risk is cut even more by being vaccinated. Older people have to be cautious, even if they are vaccinated.

AstraZeneca and Merck are both in third phase trials for Covid treatments that are not vaccines. Both companies have applied for emergency usage to start applying them right away, in a tablet form.

These will be rolled out sorted by age, and then also those with weakened immune systems that can't take the vaccine - or the vaccine has minimal protection on them.

The results from both companies are very promising. One trial had no deaths on the treatment, but people on the placebo died. Hospital cases were also drastically reduced in the non-placebo test.
Based on the available data to date, a combination of the vaccine and one of these pill courses will make the chances of death from Covid much smaller.
Perhaps by more than 50%, so the tablets could cut deaths in half (at least) for infected people.
It seems the tablets can also be taken to prevent infection, which would reduce the chance of getting it in the first place.  (Something like 70% reduced chance of being infected).

The tablets may be effective against all variants- including future ones as it takes a different approach to vaccines- which target the spike protein. The tablets might be the path to herd immunity...

The risk for young people is very low to start with...would be interesting to see how they interpreted the data...reporting isn't always what it should be.

Merck is working on a similar pill and urging the FDA to approve it. But some scientists are concerned it might infiltrate the patient’s DNA. Merck says their animal studies don’t show this….but unlike the nonsense about the vaccines there is enough concern that I’m cautious.

Actually no HasBeen…..I’m simply reporting hospital data for the month of September in England. But I would urge you to stop repeating stuff you haven’t got a clue about….it’s a disservice and irresponsible.
