This is barbarism’: shock at Russian strike on Odesa cathedral

This was the second time that the vast, sand-yellow Transfiguration Cathedral, which sits in the heart of Odesa’s Unesco-listed historic centre, had been attacked: in the 1930s, it was torn down during Joseph Stalin’s atheism drive. On Sunday morning, the rebuilt version was hit during a Russian airstrike on the city. A missile blew a large hole in the roof, collapsed the altar and left several walls charred by fire.

 So nobody will defend it - but the operation of the Church was banned by Zelenskyy so it was not operated as a church any longer.   It was built by Catherine the Great who initiated the building of a new city and named it after a city found somewhere on the Black Sea Coast by the Greeks under Alexander.

Please note the city name is ODESSA   

It’s the second time the Russians have destroyed or damaged the cathedral:

The original structure was demolished by the Soviets in 1936. It was rebuilt starting from 1999. The new cathedral was consecrated in 2003. The remains of Prince Vorontsov and his wife were reburied in the cathedral. There is a statue of him on the cathedral square. The cathedral bells are controlled by an electronic device capable of playing 99 melodies.

On July 23, 2023, the cathedral was damaged by a Russian missile attack.[4][6] UNESCO strongly condemned repeated attacks by Russia on World Heritage sites in Ukraine, including the Transfiguration Cathedral.[

I'm always amused at how people find things to be "shocked at" in war. I mean, what is war? Only people killing each other in the most brutal ways imaginable. Go read some Vietnam stuff. I am not even dealing with anything at all - but with the original name of a city that the Russians created after 776.   Dictators always change the name of cities - that does not mean anything.  in the end the real name always get returned to.   Name-changing by politicians is always sick and a effort to attack and eliminate culture - like the Ukrainians is trying to do to the Russian speaking people in Eastern Ukraine.   For a thousand years and more the name of the Ukraine capital was KIEV and spelled as such - now the new spelling is suddenly  Kjiv - because the ultra-nationalists wants it spelled that way.

Even many names were changed of cities by the Communist regime - like St Petersburg became Leningrad and street names and suburbs were changed like the Sparrow Hills in Moscow became the Lenin Hills.

But that is not an issue at all.   The USA decided to undermine the Ukraine Constitution by funding and organizing a coup in Ukraine in 2014,    The people they decided should lead the Ukraine were reactionaries and the Ukraine constitution was thrown out of the window.  That Constitution protected the human rights of all people living in Ukraine - also the people whose home language is Russian.   The Russians living in Eastern Ukraine knew what was coming and a Civil War broke out.   That was the subjects of various efforts to return Ukraine to become a constitutional state once more - all of those were sabotaged by the USA - who funds the operation of the Ukraine as a banana republic.

Zelenskyy in his campaign promised that he would through negotiation end the civil war in Eastern Ukraine in 2019.     It was patently clear that the USA from 2014 provided Billions in aid to Ukraine and the situation is clear - the Ukraine Government must do as they are instructed to do or they lose their aid funding.  That is the situation especially at present.

The oppression of Russian Speaking people in Ukraine started off initially with a fine being levelled if anybody speak  Russian in Public - but soon got progressively worse after the Democrats won  and the House was controlled by the Democrats  from January 2019.    Either you do as we say or you lose aid.    

I would stay as far away as possible from the war which could have been prevented through negotiation.   There were negotiations, but in the end if any agreements were reached the USA sabotaged those.

Do some research and you will find out the repugnant role the USA played in respect of Ukraine since 2014.   I still think Russia was wrong in invading Ukraine - but the blame for that invasion rest s entirely with the DP.
