So why did the president ask his vice president and attorney general to leave the room?

The New York Times reports — and the Washington Post and other news organizations confirm — that President Trump, at a meeting with then-FBI Director James B. Comey the day after national security adviser Michael Flynn resigned, asked Vice President Pence and Attorney General Jeff Sessions to leave him and Comey alone in the Oval Office.

At which point Trump, according to a contemporaneous memo written by Comey, asked the FBI director to drop the Flynn probe. “I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go,” Trump told Comey, according to the memo as reported by the Times. “He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.”

Does this rise to the level of criminal obstruction of justice? We don’t yet know enough to know. What was Trump’s tone? How insistent was he? Perhaps it wasn’t obstruction at the time — merely enormously unwise and even more improper. The scope of that impropriety is underlined by the reported fact that the president apparently wanted to convey his desire — his implicit instruction? — that the Flynn investigation be ended behind closed doors, with no other witnesses.

This is the kind of conversation that rational, experienced presidents know not to have. It is the kind of conversation that a White House counsel should make sparklingly, crystal clear to a president that he is not to engage in, not even close. It is the kind of conversation that seems completely in character for Trump, who, over the course of the campaign and now in office, has betrayed no — zero — understanding of the necessary separation of the president and his Justice Department when it comes to making independent judgments about political matters and political opponents.

Trump’s plea on Flynn’s behalf — perhaps it was prompted by the belief that his aide was a “good guy,” perhaps by fear about what goods that good guy might have on him — is the mirror image of his debate pronouncement that “if I win, I am going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation.” The candidate who threatens to jail his opponent easily becomes the president who instructs his FBI director to close an inconvenient investigation.

But the Trump-Comey Oval Office encounter, however Comey took it at the time, becomes even more sinister in light of the FBI director’s firing. In January, Trump reportedly sought a pledge of loyalty from Comey and failed to obtain it. In February, he pressured Comey to drop a pending investigation. In May, he fired him over “this Russia thing.” The lawyers can debate whether this satisfies the technical elements of obstruction. As a political matter, it more and more looks that way.

The irony. Bill Clinton met Loretta Lynch in an aircraft on the tarmac of an airfield and everybody was also sent away. Immediately after the meeting, Lynch said that she was not going to make the decision on whether to prosecute Hillary Clinton and that she was going to follow the recommendations of Comey. A week later Comey announced that Clinton should not be prosecuted. The AG has never in many many years blindly abstained from making a decision and follow the recommendation of the FBI director. There is a clear distinction between the roles of the AG and the FBI director. The FBI investigates and the AG decides whether to prosecute and then prosecutes.

Windpomp dont be surprised when Hilalry is indicted. She has committed so may crimes its a testimony to how corrupt Comey is to not have indicted her but its coming. As for Trump almost ayear has passed and still no evidence of any Collusion with Russia. The globalist owned MSM are in meltdown mode and it has become very apparent that they no longer have any concern for truth. Its all about get trump. But of course Trump is going nowhere and is doing a great job. I heard an OZ billionaire saying Trump has been amazing for business in the USA and that he is a highly intelligent guy and great president.
Washington Post have been caught lying about the Assistant AG wanting to resign. They also lied about Comey wanting more resources to investigate the Trump/Russian collusion hoax and furnished this as a reason for  Trump firing Comey. Then Mcabe, a demorat, deputy FBI director said this was  not so. WaPo are blatant liars and are been shown to be fake news again and again. What all of America now knows is that the globalist MSM are totally in bed with the democrats and cant be trusted. Trump/Russian collusion hoax has been investigated for almost a year with ZERO evidence of collusion. Meanwhile the murder of Seth Rich the DNC operative has gained fresh prominence as an FBI operative has told Fox Ne ws that Rich sent some 44,000 emails with 18,000 attachments to Wikileaks!!!!!!!!!!!! There is also evidence that a huge cover up is underway regarding this murder. Lou Dobbs and Hannity shows of 15th May deal with this. These You Tube clips are well worth the watch.

Politics can and always has been used to hide the truth irrespective of everything we do, say and believe.
Unfortunately for us voters.

Bob, duck and weave, not one Tr.ump supporter has addressed the header of this thread.
Typical.
It's ok, some us know, just can't smell the roses yet because there's a stench up ahead.

Well, do u know?
No, u don't?
You cannot stop accusing Donald of any of the rumours that are circulating.U should run for one of the Australian Kangaroo court positions. You have had enough practice as a prosecutor.
Stop stirring remove the roses from the container, throw they away and sit back and lets us give the guy who has been selected to investigate this mess a chance to complete his investigation.
Pleased to see that the Democrats are on board with the appointment. Trust they will be just as pleased and accept the outcome whatever it is.
I know I will trust u will as well.
Thanks.

Good try Fartur, the fact is he asked Vice President Pence and Attorney General Jeff Sessions to leave him and Comey alone in the Oval Office.
Obviously you refuse to recognize the significance of removing two very powerful members of his team....couldn't they be trusted to remain in the room? What would Tr.ump have said that he didn't want them to know?
These are the questions that need to be answered.
There are ways of dealing with issues, there ways of doing things......no-one is going to suggest that Tr.ump always chose best practice. Do you honestly believe he always went about things the right way...do you?
Your honesty is under the microscope.

Denny all political news is distorted to the left or the right depending on the source.
I cannot and will not accept rumours provided by unnamed sources as evidence. If u have true facts then the parties involved should have no hesitation in coming out of the woodwork and stating these facts publically.
This has not happened thus far....wonder why?
The guy appointed to investigate these allegations is supported by both sides of the isle so let us wait and allow this process to run its course.
Let the truth prevail.
Like I said I am prepared to accept his findings. The bigger question to me is, will you?
Corruption and deception are prevalent in all walks of life including the previous administration.
But thankfully we will soon know the truth.
Hopefully, all the issues will be clarified asap including the Clinton scandal.

My honesty is not in question.  I do not see what rumours and mudslinging have to do with honesty unless u are peering into the wrong side of the microscope and hoping.
Time will tell all.
Dankie.

.... a simple answer is I do not know. Then again who the hell has always done it the way that everybody would claim is the right way.
Did Obama?
Did Rice?Did Hillary Clinton?Did Bill Clinton?Did Chelsea Clinton?Did Lynch?Did Holder?Did Kerry?Did Reid?
Did Sanders?Did Elizabeth Warren?Did the FBI Director?Have you?????????????????
The bottom line is let the chips fall where they may and let the corruption be exposed and let all be treated the same under US law.
Let us wait and see who gets the short stick at the end of this investigation.
Remember people who live in glass houses should never throw stones.
Take cover guy.
Trust u have a great day.
Cheers.

My point remains..Tr.ump has brought chaos and mayhem to the WH....I've said it all along, the man is not presidential and therefor only has himself to be blamed. How many more does he fire, in the space of a mere three months even his own staff are looking over their shoulders....the very people he appointed.
And as for me always being critical of him....well now, didn't see you or anyone else windging away when for months your bum-chum Jihadi Beeno made scurrilous remarks about President Obama.

Your remark about bum-chum is uncalled for first of all.
I am a white Christian male, straight and proud of it.
Next, why did I have to defend Obama if I don't agree with his political views?
How many has Donald fired, well the answer is one.
He fired the FBI Director and General Flynn resigned.
Sure he has made a few blunders but the Democrats, press, TV etc are relentless indistorting each and every move or word he makes or utters.
He won the election fair and square but the opposition has not nor will they accept defeat......
The US intelligent agencies all 17 of them concluded months ago that the Russians did, in fact, hack the Democrats server but they found no evidence of collusion with Donald.
Obama did a similar act in the Israeli election and not a peep from any press or media. Plus he also got involved with the French election and still not a peep.
The attack on the President is relentless, unfair and total biased in every word they utter or print.
But let's see what if anything comes out of the special prosecutor (SP) now investigating these allegations.
Earlier I read an article which claimed that Comey's brother is a senior partner in a law firm who handles the legal affairs of the Clinton Foundation, Now if that is correct I would seriously ask the SP to investigate that link as well if I was Donald, Sessions or Senate majority leader.
No wonder this investigation has been dragged out this long.
Well, time will tell.
Cheers.

Here again, we have an example of your silly replies.
It took you two hours to come back with a stupid comment as above.
You apparently have a hard on for white and anything that they stand for.
Did u have to get advice in that two-hour window on something or did your poor breeding automatically kick in albeit it very slow?
You have an uncontrollable habit of avoiding direct answers to questions directed to you and then conveniently change the subject.
You are a typical Cape "Skollie" who should get a complete refund of all the school fees that the taxpayers in RSA spent on your wasted education.
There is not a single posting on this forum that u have contributed to that is not contaminated with your continuous low life argumentative agenda.
Now when u are able to get some advice on the questions put to u try and reply and stop ducking and diving.
We understand that the ducking and diving performance from u is in your genes but surely after all this time with educated folks around u, u should have had enough examples indicating class and communications.
The reason I inserted white in my reply to u was because it is obvious to all that you have a demented obsession with Bums and its brown product.
But we all know that u are going to reply with the three words that have been your fallback each time.
BigotRacistLiar.
Shame on u.

Just heard that the conversation between Comey and Trump has been released. Here is a short extract of the main points.
Donald to Comey:
You are corrupt. You are ducking and diving and not answering questions directed to u.You are stalling the investigation. You are grandstanding. You are covering for Obama. You are covering for Lynch.Yoy are covering for Rice. You are covering Hillary. You are covering Bill Clinton. You are covering your brother who is a senior partner in a DC law firm that handles the Clinton Foundation underhanded affairs. You do not have the support of the FBI investigators. You mislead congress with corrupt information.
You are a liar.You are a TWAT.
Finally, he said `YOU ARE GOING TO BE FIRED`.
Well, when I heard all that I was convinced that Donald was actually addressing Denny.
