  • President Donald Trump on Sunday did not let Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, weigh in on what he thought about using hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malaria drug, on patients with COVID-19.
  • Cutting across Fauci, who did not speak until late in the press conference at the request of a reporter, Trump said: “He answered that question 15 times.”
  • The US government had stockpiled 29 million hydroxychloroquine pills for treatment, despite having only anecdotal evidence so far of their effect on COVID-19. The drug is usually used for malaria or lupus, but it is among several drugs being researched as treatments for the novel coronavirus.
  • Trump’s dismissal came a day after the coronavirus task force was said to have had a confrontation over the way the White House should characterise hydroxychloroquine.

  • President Donald Trump on Sunday told reporters he wasn’t a doctor as he promoted the use of hydroxychloroquine, a drug used for malaria or lupus, to treat COVID-19 patients. But when Dr. Anthony Fauci was asked for his opinion, Trump would not let him speak.

At a White House press briefing on Sunday night, Trump repeatedly spoke about using the drug on COVID-19 patients despite little clinical evidence that the pills are effective against it. He told reporters he backed the drug as he said: “I’m not a doctor. I have common sense.”

The US government has stockpiled 29 million hydroxychloroquine pills, and Trump said it was a good option for treatment in lieu of a vaccine. Hydroxychloroquine is among numerous drugs researchers are testing as COVID-19 treatments.

“I’m trying to save lives,” Trump said. “I want them to try it, and it may work and it may not work.” Several times, he rhetorically asked: “What do you have to lose?”

But when a reporter at the briefing asked Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, what he thought, Trump did not let him speak.

“He answered that question 15 times,” Trump said, cutting the reporter off, before the press conference moved on. Fauci never answered.

Fauci took the lectern late in the conference and hadn’t spoken before the reporters began asking questions.

Hydroxychloroquine, specifically the way US officials should characterise it, was said to be at the centre of a confrontation within the White House coronavirus task force at a meeting on Saturday.

Citing an unnamed source, Axios reported that Trump’s top trade adviser, Peter Navarro, who has been trying to source the drug, told the task force that overseas studies showed the drug had “clear therapeutic efficacy.”

Fauci, a member of the task force, disagreed and said there was only anecdotal evidence, according to Axios. Navarro, an economist, reportedly pointed to a stack of documents he had brought to the meeting and told Fauci, “That’s science, not anecdote.”

The conversation apparently grew heated before the leading participants ultimately agreed that “the administration’s public stance should be that the decision to use the drug is between doctors and patients,” according to Axios.

Denny

The coronavirus issue has become a political football in the USA and some of the issues have been trivialized in the process.   In fact doctors al over the world has tried a variety of medical cocktails to save lives and the malaria issue is just one of those,

Without a vaccine being available that would continue and the article has one factual issue totally wrong,   The USA have no stockpile of the pills and has a severe shortage at present - so much so that malaria sufferers have given up usage of the pills due to the present crisis.

One has to be very careful to believe unnamed sources when it comes to anything in the USA or for that matter anywhere in the world,    Why not be honest and name the source of the story? In any event the media said Fauci was kicked out by Trump - which obviously was from another unnamed source and was totally wrong.

In a work group like the one referred to there always will be internal differences of opinion and the ultimate decision on the issue was the real and only reasonable one to take.

Are you're saying Beeno is dishonest when he floods this forum with hundreds of unsourced posts?

I don't see you or anyone else complaining when he does...... ain't that funny.

'…….the ultimate decision on the issue was the real and only reasonable one to take."

Naaah, I'd back my medical expert all day every day on a medical issue, not an economist.

Some of the things Beeno comes up with is claptrap nonsense and represent viewpoints of individuals,  I told him a couple of times he is off the rails on issues,

In general I am not one for conspiracy theories and some of the news articles are real nonsense,   That si why the above quoted reports seems to be another of the theories.       .

Mike,  Don't go off topic....you stated that I was dishonest for not quoting my source, I pointed out it's awfully funny that Beeno has been posting unsourced material for years and neither you or any of the other Trump idolizers have whined about it......be honest now, it's ok if he does it because he is Trump's little Herr Goering....I'm not!

That's the difference isn't it?

Denny - No I did not question your source - it was Axios,  I questioned their use of unnamed  sources to base their report on.   .

There is a video of this. Trump does a live reality TV show on Corona each evening- and this article is just quoting the words verbatim from this.
Trump said how many times must this question be answered before Fauci had a chance to answer . He shouted back at the journalist saying you guys always ask the same question over and over.

It's not funny anymore.....I watch his live press briefings in the morning, seems like he's lost it. Yesterday is probably the worst.

Given Fauci told America in late January that the virus was not a major concern and no doubt advised Trump  along those lines, it’s amazing anybody pays any attention to him.  Frankly it’s amazing he is still on the task force.

An old, out of touch  man in a dusty, neglected area of medicine.

The same Fauci who said that the WHO chief is a stand up guy. The same WHO chief who was duped by the Chinese Govt.

China and the WHO's chief: Hold them both accountable for pandemic

The World Health Organization (WHO) last week finally declared the coronavirus from China that rapidly spread across the world a pandemic. Now, with more than 150,000 confirmed cases globally and more than 5,700 deaths, the question is why it took so long for the WHO to perceive what many health officials and governments had identified far earlier.

We believe the organization’s director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, like China’s Xi Jinping, should be held accountable for recklessly managing this deadly pandemic. Tedros apparently turned a blind eye to what happened in Wuhan and the rest of China and, after meeting with Xi in January, has helped China to play down the severity, prevalence and scope of the COVID-19 outbreak.

From the outset, Tedros has defended Chinadespite its gross mismanagement of the highly contagious disease. As the number of cases and the death toll soared, the WHO took months to declare the COVID-19 outbreak as a pandemic, even though it had met the criteria of transmission between people, high fatality rates and worldwide spread.

When President Trump took a critical step to stop the coronavirus at U.S. borders by issuing a travel ban as early as Jan. 31, Tedros said widespread travel bans and restrictions were not needed to stop the outbreak and could “have the effect of increasing fear and stigma, with little public health benefit.” He warned that interfering with transportation and trade could harm efforts to address the crisis, and advised other countries not to follow the U.S. lead.

When he should have been focusing on global counter-pandemic efforts, Tedros instead was politicizing the crisis and helping Xi to shirk his responsibility for a series of wrongdoings in addressing the outbreak. Tedros used the WHO platform to defend the Chinese government’s gross violation of human rights. For example, from its first case discovered in November to its Wuhan lockdown, and even until today, China has been dishonest about the coronavirus’s origin and prevalence. People who tried to uncover it were detained or disappeared, their online reports and posts deleted. China has misinformed and misled the world, and Tedros joined this effort by publicly praising China’s “transparency” in battling the spread of the disease.

When Xi ordered Chinese health officials to speed up the development of drugs by using “integrated Chinese traditional herbal medicine and Western medicine,” the WHO’s official publication, “Q&A on coronaviruses (COVID-19),” made a subtle change. Chinese netizens found a discrepancy between the Chinese and English versions of a list of measures deemed ineffective against COVID-19. The English version listed four items — smoking, wearing multiple masks, taking antibiotics, and traditional herbal remedies. The fourth item was not included in the Chinese version. (Today the English version also has deleted that item.)

China recently pledged $20 million to help the WHO fight the COVID-19 outbreak, for which Tedros thanked Xi. But we note China’s connections to Tedros’s homeland of Ethiopia, now called East Africa’s “Little China” because it has become China’s bridgehead to influence Africa and a key to China’s Belt and Road initiative there. Indeed, China has invested heavily in Ethiopia.

Tedros was elected to his position with the WHO in 2017, despite the fact that he was not trained as a medical doctor and had no global health management experience. A former minister of health and minister of foreign affairs for Ethiopia, Tedros is an executive member of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) political party, which came to power through a struggle in 1991 and has been listed as a perpetrator in the Global Terrorism Database. After he became the WHO’s chief, critics questioned Tedros’s attempt to appoint then-Zimbabwe dictator Robert Mugabe as a WHO goodwill ambassador.

The coronavirus pandemic has shown that Tedros is not fit to lead the WHO. Because of his leadership, the world may have missed a critical window to halt the pandemic or mitigate its virulence. The world is now battling rising infections and many countries have imposed restrictions. As leader of the WHO, Tedros should be held accountable for his role in mismanaging efforts to control the spread of the virus.
