President Trump has terminated all trade talks with Canada after accusing a government-sponsored advert of “fraudulently” using a speech by Ronald Reagan to criticise the current administration’s tariffs policy.

Trump took to Truth Social to rail against the advert that featured a voiceover of the former president, which said tariffs “hurt every American”.

“TARIFFS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY, AND ECONOMY, OF THE U.S.A.,” Trump wrote. “Based on their egregious behaviour, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.”

The video was funded by the government of Ontario in reaction to the Trump administration imposing a 35 per cent tax on many Canadian imports and targeted industries like steel manufacturing with specific duties.

Mark Carney, Canada’s prime minister, has said he was “disappointed” by Trump’s decision to raise the level of tariffs in August. Earlier this month, Carney held talks with the president to try to reach a deal.

Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario, unveiled the one-minute advert last week, saying: “We’ll never stop making the case against American tariffs on Canada.”

The video features an excerpt from a 1987 national radio address by Reagan that focused on foreign trade.

“When someone says, ‘Let’s impose tariffs on foreign imports,’ it looks like they’re doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. And sometimes, for a short while it works, but only for a short time,” the former president said.

“But over the long run, such trade barriers hurt every American, worker and consumer.

He added: “High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars … Markets shrink and collapse, businesses and industries shut down and millions of people lose their jobs.”

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute has said the advert “misrepresents the presidential radio address”.

It also accused the Ontario government of not seeking permission to use and edit the remarks and added it was “reviewing its legal options”.

“The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about tariffs,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, accompanied by an image of the statement.

The quotes in the advert were taken selectively from different parts of the former presidents’ address, but there is no indication that they have been altered.

The video is part of a $75 million Canadian dollar campaign on US television channels.

Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, has been particularly hard-hit by the US tariffs, and Ford has been very vocal in his opposition to the taxes.

In March, he threatened to cut off power supply to three US states: Michigan, New York, and Minnesota, in retaliation for the Trump tariffs.

Liberals in Canada should pay full attention to what has happened. Canadians are liberals and can not ignore what it means. The Trump administration has a long record of using intellectual property without any permission, lately, they used the Pokemon intellectual property to promote their anti migrant police.

People in the US live in fear, they have no autonomy. The reagan foundation is revealing. They seem to peddle the idea that they own a public statement made by a public president of a republic and therefore can bar the use of it at will. Liberals seem to struggle with what a republic means, even though liberals in the US kept harping they had a republic.

As to placing the text back in context, it only makes things worse. Reagan advocated for lowering trade barriers.

He did advocate free trade but the quoted speech was an explanation of why Reagan was putting tariffs on Japan:

‘As perhaps you've heard, last week I placed new duties on some Japanese products in response to Japan's inability to enforce their trade agreement with us on electronic devices called semiconductors.’

Sounds familiar and yes the Ronald Regan Presidential Foundation was correct, the quote needed to be put in context.

Ah, the context, just as for the guy who used to sell words for a living and was shot down.

The full text must be replaced in the context it was pronounced, not the few punchlines that were extracted.

The general context was about lowering the trade barriers and this text was actually an apology to explain the tariffs put on Japan. Reagan used the opportunity to re affirm the core of his economical beliefs. The global picture was clearly about lowering trade barriers and Reagan's position can not be summarised to placing tariffs in Japan.

This is another example of liberalised speech. Liberals speak with no constraints. Next, they are going to explain that there had never been slavery in the US since 10 per cent or less of the blacks were freed. Or try to redefine the slave status as they tried to do in the school books, with an involuntary worker or something, dismissing by the way, that slaves were first and foremost capital.

The Trump administration policy makes tariffs a norm, even countries that has a trade deficit with the US are stricken with a base tariff of ten per cent.

Liberals are exposed more than ever, they have kept claiming that they owe their success to supposed liberal principles and values and nowadays they are showing they have no attachment to the said principles. On the other hand, they focus on other things based on coercion which have always existed since their inception. The US have been running a business of farming the poor and extorting the weak since 1776.

Remember peeps when liberals used to propagate the thing that a good government is a government that fears its people.

US people are in fear, they are afraid of their government. They have no autonomy. The Reagan foundation is afraid, they can not even stand for Reagan's legacy and wants to censor people who quote from a public speech given by Reagan as a public servant. They do not own the speech, at least in a republic. All this because it angered the Trump administration and the foundation lives in fear of their own government, they are afraid of replication.

This answer is to become more self-sufficient and start blocking Big Tech from accessing our data.

Instead, give the data to homegrown companies with the new gap in the market.

America wants to access a global free trade system while applying sanctions and protectionism in its own markets. This is a similar position to China.

I’ve seen a lot. I know the signs. The sleeping giant always remains asleep until some venality becomes so noxious, some action so disrespectful of the common good, some brutality so noisy, that he has no choice but to awaken.

Very few countries are being governed as DJT is governing the US. DJT operates without constraints or semblance at least which allows him to cross lines that could not be crossed in other countries.

Liberals fear empty space as it could be filled by something else than propaganda. The free press is actively supporting DJT. It is part of DJT's strategy to flood the public space with garbage statements so the free press is providing with bones to gnaw at. The free press is mostly reactive and contented with picking on one of the daily fifteen antics Trump produces every day. There is no structured campaign against DJT, one that would operate independently from Trump's daily productions.

Trump's hardcore supporters are used to saying that Trump says a lot of things and one must screen them out. It is all part of the plan. The free press does not oppose Trump and provides him with a powerful echo chamber to distract from core and deep courses of action.

It is an interesting point. Liberals usually rely on an incomplete status to claim things do not happen. Obviously, Trump does not expect every single of his actions to go unchecked. It is the same process as saturating a defensive missile dome with too many missiles at the same time. Some are blocked but others go through. In case of the US, the rate of interception is low. Certain actions are blocked but many are slipping through.
