The Russia Federation has a 40 million Muslim population and Putin made it very clear for years that Russia support a two state solution to the problems in Israel. He supported the area controlled by the Arabs - conquered by Israel in 1967 - should be given independence from Jewish control and that remains a fact. A balancing act is what Russia needs under the circumstances and that is what Putin has to support

He does not allow terrorist groups to operate in Russia and obviously are not taking sides on the issue of Hamas and Israel - bar to suggest that some solution needs to be found to the present impasse. Russia has a naval base in Syria - but for the rest stays clear from what is happening in the Mid-East.
