As stated when providing an explanation for the action of the russian mercenary leader, mercenary life has its perks and drawbacks.
The balance between both is determined by the conflict.
Mercenary life may be more similar to a hunting safari (many conflicts mercenaries have been involved by the west like in Africa, Iraq, libya etc) Conflicts black water mercenary groups were involved.
Perks were largely superior to drawbacks (oppoeruniry ro kill, rape etc largely superior to risk of being killed)
The current war is way different, drawbacks superior to perks.

Ukrainian mercenaries reported their miscalculation about this conflict. Which is easier to understand as mercenaries troops were usually involved in conflicts the enemy was easy and fun to dispatch.
