UK sending long-range Storm Shadow missiles to Ukraine, says defence minister

Britain donating arms capable of striking targets in occupied Crimea as Kyiv prepares counteroffensive against Russia

Britain has become the first western country to provide Ukraine with the long-range Storm Shadow cruise missiles that Kyiv wants to boost its chances in a much-anticipated counteroffensive, prompting a threat from the Kremlin of a military response.

I will be a few more weeks until Ukraine are ready to do the counter attack. By that time, they will have more even more long-range weapons

Ukraine will never use these new missiles to attack Russia directly, just the Russian forces that are currently occupying ground / land within Ukraine

The Ukraine government have given their commitment to the UK that these missiles will only ever be utilized within the territory of Ukraine.

Without that assurance, the UK would never have provided these long range missiles

"Ukraine will never use these new missiles to attack Russia directly..."

There's no way to guarantee that...Ukraine is given access to dangerous toys...one of the most corrupt countries in the world trusted with some extremely dangerous weaponry...almost like giving a gun to a toddler...the world is on a dangerous path...madness.

"There's no way to guarantee that..."

True, any wayward rocket could land behind Russian lines, if it was used close to the border...which could spark WW3..

However, I seriously doubt the UK would ever endorse this usage, without taking into account all necessary precautions, permutations or repercussions

I reckon one prerequisite to using this missile would be that it has to be within a certain distance from the border of Russia, maybe with a 100km - 200km buffer .... I don't know.

So this is the Putin calculus…..I can blow up your country, and for the moment I’ll accept you defending yourself inside your borders. But if you stray across the Russian border, I’ll start WW3.

And that’s okay?

Fair play to the UK on this one, they have been the first to break several of the weapons taboo's that other countries have followed. Perhaps not for the right reason's but who care's, Ukraine needs these.
