If you were to listen to some of the comments about Rubio's words relating to the UFC, you'd swear Rubio was placing equal significance on the UFC and the moon landing.
But then, as I did, you have a moment and go and look at what he actually said...
"This is a country that is built on doing things that no one thought were possible. When JFK said we’re going to put a man on the moon, a lot of people laughed and said that’s impossible. And at some level, that’s what the UFC was."
...and you realise he's simply saying that US innovators have a way of making the seemingly impossible possible.
Assume that when the Boks beat France last year, a journalist said something along the lines of, "Outnumbered, like the Voortrekkers at Blood River, the Boks circled the wagons and came out with a victory."
Would you, or any sane person, make accusations of equating the outcome of a rugby match to an historic event that defines a culture?
