Now they have the women's and men's Chess World champions, the Chinese do.

I can't imagine how good Bobby Fischer would have become if he had had computers to play against. He used to play against himself fir competition.Carlsen has styled some of his play off Alpha Zero.

Rugby has become a game of chess, we should have Alpha Zero as assistant coach.

When the quote says “Small minds discuss people,” it means that those who discuss people as an end to itself are shallow. Unfortunately, a fair segment of the media and our population today dedicate themselves to discussing people. You have tabloid magazines, celebrity gossip sites, and people who follow celebrity gossip like it is the central goal of their lives. Office politics is not uncommon. People backstab and criticize each other more often than we like. Even our politicians today make personal attacks and conduct smear campaigns. Online, we often see people shaming or attacking each other, or worse still, others supporting such behavior and joining in the attack, rather than taking a higher ground.

They pretty shallow people these atheists.... I mean the amount of resources for building Christians up is huge, especially since Covid and so many web Churches.

What can an atheist say.... "I don't believe" ... that's it. They turn their unbeli ef into an attack on your belief. Very shallow.

These guys are something else. And that's a superficial assessment. I think if we understood all the planning behind the moves almost every game they play would blow our minds.

Seriously Bendover, how did you manage to turn a discussion on the World Chess Championship into yet another tirade about how bad atheists are?

Agree with you ButtPlug. I don't think many people understand the mental strength required to perform at this level.

Sadly, the world chess title means a lot less to me than it used to. I was an avid fan of chess history and used to play through Championship matches between the likes of Tal, Botvinnik, Alekhine, Capablanca and Fischer. Since it split up and after Kasparov walked away it's lost a lot of it's appeal. Now with Carlson saying he couldn't really care less so let two other contenders play for his title my interest has been lower than ever . . . but well done to Ding.

I also don't think many people know how important winning the title has always meant to the Russians. During the Cold War Russia pretty much measured itself by Olympic gold medals, having the world's best ballerinas and having a Russian World Chess champion. Those were the things Russian people needed to feel happy and boy did the Russian leaders do whatever they could to make sure they happened!

Bobby Fischer was certifiably insane (as were several world champions including Paul Morphy, Wilhelm Steinitz and Alexander Alekhine) but he wasn't that far off the reservation when he accused the Russians of cheating during his match with Boris Spassky. Those weren't loony conspiracy theories, the KGB were actively involved in every aspect of Spassky's preparation as well as the match organization.

Even today, I bet Putin and the Russian top brass won't be very happy to hear that a Russian lost to a Chinese.

I don't give a shyte about the politics or what means what to whom. Call them player A and Player B for all i care. I want to see the match, have my view of it...and then have my mind blown afterwards when I see an analysis and find out what was actually going on. Every single one of these high level matches is basically a unique version of Fight Club. If you're only watching the match and moving on you may as well not have bothered. The analysis is where all the meat is...unless you're a chess genius, which nobody here is.

Yep plum in these games it's who falters that loses the match.
Carlsen prepares a year in advance against an opponent, analysing their strengths and weaknesses.
I think the youngster who beat him and he accused of cheating was using machine tactics that he had memorized. These days they don't adjourn games but instead speed them up with time clocks,to prevent players consulting Alpha Zero.

Why would memorising machine tactics be a cheat? Do they use AI to learn how the opposition play, get it to spit out counters to that players tactics and then memorise said?

It was because the youngster had been caught out on online chess cheating, yet beat him in a proper game. Pretty complicated lawsuit of 100k he filed against Carlsen.

Carlsen himself uses Al tactics. That is sacrificing pieces for position. Another alpha Zero tactic is to use the king much more in open space and not to castle too quickly.

I know someone who has built an AI Programme for hou se sales, pretty much does away with estate agents.

I understand that using software life would be cheating. I don't understand how using the same tactics as a machine is cheating.
