• Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had called on Western allies to deliver more air defence systems after at least eight people were killed in a Russian drone strike on Odesa.

  A four-month-old baby and a three-year-old child were among the victims of the overnight strike on Ukraine's southern city, local officials said.

  "Russia continues to wage war on civilians," President Zelensky said.

  Russian troops have recently made gains in Ukraine which faces arms shortages.

  Last month, Moscow took control of the key eastern town of Avdiivka.

  Ukraine's commander-in-chief has signalled he will replace some military leaders on the eastern front.

  In a post on Telegram on Saturday, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said a nine-storey building had been destroyed as a result of "an attack by Russian terrorists" in Odesa.

  Footage from the scene showed that several floors of a residential building had been destroyed.

• The death toll has risen steadily throughout the day, as rescuers pulled out more bodies from the rubble.

  At least eight people are now confirmed to have been killed and another eight injured. But a number of people are still unaccounted for, and there are fears the death toll will rise further.

  Separately, Ukrainian officials said one person had been killed in the north-eastern Kharkiv region near the Russian border and another in the southern Kherson region.

  In a post on social media, Mr Zelensky said: "We need more air defences from our partners. We need to strengthen the Ukrainian air shield to add more protection for our people from Russian terror. More air defence systems and more missiles for air defence systems saves lives."

  Ukraine's air force said it had downed 14 or 17 drone launched by Russia overnight.

  Russian forces have has launched thousands of Iranian-made drones at Ukrainian targets since they invaded Ukraine over two years ago.

  In retaliation Ukraine has targeted Russian sites, notably oil facilities.

• On Saturday a drone struck a residential building in St Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city. About 100 people were evacuated and there are no reports of casualties, officials say.

  Some Russian media said the incident could have been caused by a downed Ukrainian drone, which was heading towards a fuel depot. There has been no official confirmation of this from the Kremlin.

  The full-scale invasion of Ukraine launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin is now in its third year.

  Early on Saturday, the commander-in-chief of Ukrainian forces, Gen Oleksandr Syrskyi, signalled that he would replace some commanders on the eastern front.

  The move comes after the fall of Avdiivka, which marked the biggest change on front line since Russian troops seized the nearby town of Bakhmut in May 2023.

  Avdiivka was engulfed in fierce fighting for months. This week, Ukraine's military withdrew from two nearby villages, losing more territory as the supply of weapons and ammunition from its Western allies ran short.

• Gen Syrskyi said he would change those commanders whose orders and actions had threatened the lives of troops.

  He wrote on Telegram: "I have sent groups of specialists to individual brigades where there are problems with the preparation of the headquarters to transfer experience and provide assistance."

  Gen Syrskyi praised some brigades, and promised - after listening to front-line units - to provide reserves, ammunition and expertise to back them up.

  He insisted the situation on the front line "remains difficult, but controlled".

  President Zelensky sacked Gen Syrskyi's predecessor, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, less than a month ago.

The map shows little gains by the Russian Amy - but what is not stated is that the Ukraine army is in a desperate situation and retreating constantly for reasons stated by me elsewhere,

I do not approve of attacks on civilians at all - what I wrote above deals purely with the situation iro the actual military situation in Ukraine.  From my comments I still support peace talks - with the USA not being involved at all - they are the people who caused the Russian Invasion anyway.

In any event the true fact is that the Russian troops are advancing and the Ukrainian army is retreating =- that is fir some braindead people based on false propaganda diffcult to accept,   

The EU armies are total shit and taking into account the Afghanistan and Iraq disasters the US Army is even worse.    The latter is caused by simplistic errors in laying down quotas for recruitment o troops by the Biden Administration  with the result that targets are not met.  The USA are trying desperately to get 60 000 trained troops back after treating them like prisoners and fired them after the refusal of troops to take vaccines and that has been unsuccessful as well.    

My guess is that China will attack Taiwan in December 2024 and/or .January 2025 and conquer Taiwan in less than a week while Biden is still President.  He would be unable to do anything without permission of President Xi,

Note - I am for peace talks - all of the BB and SB braindead are for war.  Why don't you stop promo/ting war on site and go for strengthening peace negotiations.   The neo-con warmongers in  Washington feels nothing for the people whose deaths they are causing  - so write to them to try and get them to realize the damage they are causing to humanity.

De-Nazifaction is Russian double speak for regime change and also a domestic motivational slogan.

I did nothing of the kind.    I know where the NAZI story came from though.     The chief Nazi in Ukraine was a bloke by the name of Banderas.    He was effectively the ruler of Ukraine while occupied by the German Army in 1942 until 1944.   He was so valuable to the Nazi's they accommodated him in a camp  in Poland from where he was largely responsible for the killing of more than 600 000 Ukrainians and Polish people - mostly Jews but al.    When the German army withdrew from Poland and Ukraine they took Banderas  with them.    He was already in Germany when he approached  the US Army promising them his support against the Russians.    When the Polish Government asked for Banderas extradition to Poland - the US Government refused to oblige them and he stayed on in Munich.   Banderas was assassinated in 1956.

In the 1990's there were two developments.   In Ukraine there was a  Banderas Movement  established and joined by people honouring Banderas    Aside from that a private army called the Asov Battalion - who used the German Army methods and SS training approach as a model in Ukraine.  

Both were controlled by fringe politicians and the Banderas related movement never made a real impact in  elections in Ukraine up and into 2014.   Hate spreading against all Russians - inclusive of the Russian speaking  people  in Ukraine was their field of operation.

The USA through the .Embassy in Ukraine dealt with by the CIA caused the problems that still prevails in Ukraine.   When Assistant Secretary of State Nuland  picked people to form the new Government in Ukraine - she concentrated on appointing people who are involved in the Banderas Movement and even made appointments with Biden to ensure their involvement in the new Ukraine Government.      Most of the ex-Bandera movement members are still holding the positions they were appointed to in 2014.   

The Bandera Movement involvement in the Ukraine Government remains a problem -  they are the people who want ethnic cleansing of the Russian-speaking people in Ukraine - and that basically caused he start of the civil war in Eastern Ukraine.   The Russians regard them as Nazi's.    .           .
