There are 27 ranked players playing  this week  and three very notable people are not laying  - - namely Djokovic, Sinner and  Alcaraz.

*    Djokovic routinelty played in the Dubai tournament after distinguishing himself in the Australian Open and even in the year he did not paly in Australia.   However, over the last thee times he played in Dubai his performances were sub-par.    However, this year did not achieve the  high standard of performance in Australia and is skipping the Dubai tournament  for th fiorst time in years.    However, there were wo US tournaments he did not play in over the last two  years and going through the names of potential  players in the ATP 1000 Indian Wells tournament starting next week I found his name - so he may be in the Draw or both the Indian Wells and Miami tournaments. 

*      Alcaraz had an ankle injury in RIo - but he apparently may play inn the Indian Wells tournament as well  if the list of playes mentioned on the Indian Wells website is to be believed.    He obviously would not play if his ankle is not healed.

*      After winning  the Australian Open Sinner did not play in any of the 43 ATP 500 tournaments that took place or taking place this week.   According to the Indian Wells website he will also play next week.

Another name mentionmed on the Indian Wells website is Nadal.   In announcing his retirement last year Nadal said he will play in some farewell tournaments in 2024.    So far he was entered  in the Australian Open and  in the Qatar and  Dubai tournaments - but ended up not playing  in either of the three,   He apparently would like to play in Indian Wells - starting his farewell matches there - but whether he will in fact play is not certain           

   .      

 So far  seeded players played in 10  matches - 4 of them them lost their matches in Round  1 - not very good by those 4 players.

Day 2 ha produced anther 4 seeded players losing in Round 1.     Those include  Zverev and Tommy Paul.

After his heroics in Qatar - Mensik is going to go strong in  Dubai as well.     He won his Round 1 match and will face  Davidovich Fokina  in  Round 2 - one of the players he defeated on his way to the semi-finals in Doha, Qatar.     His quarterfinal opponent is likely yo be Medvedev.
