Russia is the hot favorites to win the 2021 series tomorrow. They have all of Medvedev, Rublev, Karatzev and Kachanov in their squad.
With both Medevedev and Rublev winning their singles matches in 2 sets they won the Davis cup - the first Russians to win the trophy since 2006.
There are three major team events on the AIP Agenda each year namely -
* the Tennis World Cup played in January each year in Australia; played on a Nations basis\
* the Laver Cup representing players from Europe playing against players from the rest of the world
* the Davis Cup played on a nations basis,
In 2021 Russia using in the main Medvedev and Rublev won both the two national tournaments - winning most of their single matches - with Rublev also playing in the doubles when needed. In the Laver Cup case the team representatives can play as many as three matches - normally one singles match and to doubles matches, In the 2021 series the European tram won 14 of the 15 matches played - the one lost match was a doubles match. The only player who played in three matches and won all three in 2021 was Andrey Rublev.
The Tennis World Cup this year starts on 1 January 2022 and last through to the start of the Aussie Open. The players will have to proof they are vaccinated and tested negative before admission to Australia by not later than 17 December 2021 if they intent to play in the World Cup and the subsequent Aussie Open. In the case of the latter series the latest admission date will be 3 January 2022. The dates mentioned are set to allow for 14 days isolation in Australia.
Two of the leading players - Djokovic and Tsitsipas - have thus far refused to be vaccinated. It is likely that the latter would accept vaccination - but the situation of Djokovic is unclear. Chances are he will not go to Australia for the mentioned tournaments because of the above-mentioned Australian Government requirements.
